The tour was really beautiful. Numerous stops along the scenic drive, were truly worth it. The thing I enjoyed most nothing was really crowded, which made it a nice afternoon. Really shows beauty.

We went up to Dan's farm on a nice sunny day. The drive up from Hilo was scenic. It took us a few tries to find the turnoff for the farm, but our persistence paid off.
Wow. Dan and his partner have built an amazing collection of tropical plants. Their knowledge of the chocolate making process was really great. We got to check out the tree house that they lived in while building the permanent building on the site, walked through the whole chocolate making process, including some small scale machines that Dan had built himself. Overall a wonderful tour, with even better chocolate.
The tour itself involved walking through the cacao grove plus a bonus trip to see the other exotic plants in their collection. Then we got a refreshing cacao juice sorbet (one of a kind!) plus a chocolate tasting with local chocolate.
A++. I can't recommend this tour enough!

We chose to take this route from Hilo to Kona (Mamalahoa Highway #19) instead of Saddle Road. What an enjoyable scenic drive. The Hamakua Coast offers so many opportunities to experience the beauty and history of the Island. We stopped at beautiful beaches along the coast, took a side road to see Akaka Falls, saw the aftermath of a tsunami at Laupahoehoe and much more. The road is built on the slopes of Mauna Kea and provides excellent views of the rugged coast, valleys and cliffs.

This is certainly a road to travel and the scenery is magical and mysterious. Would highly recommend travelling on this to enjoy the extreme countryside. So enjoyable.

Such a leisurely way to spend a morning, driving over bridges and past waterfalls on Highway 19, north of Hilo, that gives you an authentic look at old Hawaii. Little towns, neat homes, incredible ocean views, and a few little shops along the way to help distract you from the natural beauty along the way. Highly recommend.
