We walked there and hired a ride back. The walk was long and very windy but worth it. The ride back was a bit scary. The beach was beautiful. A nice place to relax for a few hours. The water was a bit rough when we were there; no one went in past waist deep. I would highly recommend.

Worth hiking out to Mahana Beach if you have the time! We had never seen a beach like it, with the olive colored sand, and it is quite neat how you walk along through what looks like barren pasture and suddenly come across this little oasis! It is just over a 2 mile hike to get there from the parking... More

I debated going to Green Sand Beach based on several reviews on various websites saying it's overrated, but I'm so glad I ended up checking it out. A few recommendations: 1. Hike it, don't drive! It's less than 5-miles total round-trip, almost completely flat hike. There's no shade, but it's stunningly beautiful walk along ocean most of the way; the... More

The actual green sand was pretty cool. We swam in the very intense waves. If you're not a good swimmer I don't recommend going here. My husband got picked up by a wave and slammed into the shore. We paid a local to drive us, $15 per person. It was a terrible drive. Very dusty and bumpy and about 25... More

Something different to see but the road in is horrible one lane drive and you have to pay locals $15 each to drive you down there. No facilities either.

We had no idea there was such a thing as green sand. We learned how this phenomena happened. The beach was also a great place to swim. So glad we drove there from Kona. The drive is on a curvy road and slow going.

Definitely recommend seeing/swimming this beach. This is a desert type beach with stark arid cliffs enclosing it. The sand is "semi-green", but the water is aqua with powder blue waves. Use your Google GPS to get you to the parking lot where you will find a local concession to drive you the 3 miles to the beach. You can walk... More

This is one of the two green sand beaches in the world. It really is green. You pay the locals $15 to give you a ride and I highly recommend doing that, cause it is 3 miles of boring in and again out.

My family with 2 small kids went to this beach. We paid a local to drive us in, which I would recommend if your kids are small (they loved the bumpy ride). You need a 4 wheel drive with high clearance for the road in. The beach was nice, the shore break was too rough for my 4 yr old... More

We were told by hotel staff the walk to the beach was only a mile. It's about three miles. A mile and 1/2 in, we decided to turn around until we found someone driving in other folks. They drove us in and out for $20.00, well worth it, as the walk in, is hot and in the sun. The beach... More
