About
Explore the rugged nature of Kauai Island, known for its stunning beaches, 4,000-year-old sea caves, and ancient archaeological sites. Drive to the western end of the Kuhio Highway on Kauai’s northern shore to find this park, tucked between lush ridges overhanging the ocean. You can swim and snorkel at the beaches around the parking lot or do the 11-mile hike to the secluded Kalalau Beach, from where you can access Na Pali Coast State Park. There are fantastic views and waterfalls along the way. Get there early to secure a parking spot and escape the midday heat. – Tripadvisor

- Darlene PPine Beach, New Jersey100 contributionsda kine! :)We utilized the shuttle service, even though one member of our party had a Hawaii driver's license because all the online reviews said parking is very limited and you might not find a space. During the first week in November there was plenty of parking left over, but utilizing the shuttle, although it was $35 p/p, assured us smooth entry. I saw some reviews where people complained about the process, but it's there to help preserve the area for years and prevent overcrowding. With a little planning and homework, it's really no big deal and the hike, beach, and views were 100% worth it. We hiked the 2 miles (one way) to Hanakapi-ai Beach. It's a strenuous hike with a steep incline and a stream crossing, but adventurous and fun. If I go back I would definitely like to go two more miles in to the waterfall, but not all of my party was game for that. We spent some time at Ke'e beach after the hike, where we saw rainbows and seals. The water was calm and the beach was surprisingly empty. It was my 2nd favorite beach in all of Kaua'i (with Secret Beach being my favorite).Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten November 19, 2023
- jak60195Schaumburg, Illinois6 contributionsOne of the best hikes.Even though it poured, we had a great time. If you like to hike, this is for you. The hike was challenging but worth it .The views were amazing and the beach was beautiful! Make sure you eat before you go, or bring in food because there is no place to buy it in the park. Eat before you go is better so you don't have to carry as much. Walking sticks are recommendedVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 29, 2023
- Timothy KChicago, Illinois297 contributionsend of the roadThis park is the end of the road and the beginning of the hiking trail to the Napoli coast. The beach is nice, with rollers coming in and eroded trees along the edge, roots spreading out above the sand. There are some toilet and picnic facilities. The signs say you need a reservation or come on the shuttle bus, so it is worth checking. On the walk to the beach are some nice Taro fields giving a good impression of how they grow. We did not take the trail, but it is important to take this on carefully, as it can be a rugged hike after the first parts. Getting to the park is along a narrow, bumpy and twisty road, which may make the shuttle a good option.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 2, 2024
- Jonathan P10 contributionsBeautiful hikeWe booked our reservation and did a hike that ended with a waterfall. The hike was challenging at times, but you get to enjoy the mountains and ocean scenery as you go along. Hiking in Kauai is a blast, and we would go back to Haena state park again.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten April 21, 2024
- SJLewis13 contributionsMissed out didn't know about booking in advance.Do not make the same mistake as us. We didn't realise we had to book online in advance. We were unable to book from the car park area because there is no Internet in the area, so we drove back into Hanalei where we had a signal but there were no tickets available for the next 7 days. This State Park and the whole area look beautiful and well worth the visit.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 8, 2024
- Dare2LiveDallas, Texas119 contributionsAbsolutely Worth the Trip!A group of 6 of us grabbed a $40 each shuttle pass from gohaena.com about 30 days ahead of the day we knew we wanted to go to the park. On our scheduled day, we made our way to the Waipa Park & Ride for our shuttle. DO NOT BE LATE! We missed our reserved shuttle by 1 minutes and had to catch standby (took about 40 minutes to get the next available shuttle for 6 people). The shuttle ride (both to and from) was pleasant. Lots to see along the drive and the drivers were informative, funny and friendly. Ha'ena State Park is gorgeous. We did a hike along the Kalalau Trail to the Coast Viewpoint in the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park (located . The hike to the Viewpoint is no joke. It was even a challenge for weekend hikers and avid runner in our group. But the view was worth it! The Ke'e Beach was our #1 favorite of many beach excursions during our trip to Kauai. All 6 of us voted it the best. So take the shuttle and enjoy this pristine area of Kauai! Of Note: I highly recommend the shuttle service. Yes, it takes some time to catch and ride but it keeps the traffic in the park down and helps preserve the beauty of the park!Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 24, 2024
- Nashville_brent_65Franklin, Tennessee375 contributionsAbsolutely amazing views and hikesWe did our research and reserved shuttle and park passes in advance. The hike to the beach is about 2 miles and took us 1 hour 35 minutes. Absolutely stunning views of the Na Pali Coast. My 3 companions hung out at the beach and hiked back. I hiked the additional 2 miles to the waterfall. It took me 1 hour and 10 minutes but I hike fairly fast. It was more impressive in person. It’s very tall. I also got in the pool and swam under the falls. The water was cold but so refreshing! It took me 1 hour 50 minutes to hike the 4 miles back. If you have bad knees (like 2 of my companions) then I would skip the hike to the waterfall. It’s not more strenuous than the first two miles but there are many roots and rocks that you have to step up and over. My knees were a little sore and they’re healthy.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten July 26, 2024
- Laura K4 contributionsAmazing! This was a highlight of our trip and the trail closed 2 days after we were there. I tried so hard to get park parking pass but am so I glad to have the shuttle pass. Drivers were excellent and Sherman at the park was full of info. We made it to the 2nd beach and ate our lunch and stood in the waves it was amazing. The views were amazing too. I can see how things could go bad bc the bathrooms were gross as the kalalau beach hikers along with day hikers were all over the showers, restrooms and water fountain - just gross but that is not the park's problem. I'm so glad I got to visit.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 7, 2024

The state has basically told tourists to stay away. They have instigated a reservation system that essentelly prohibits nonresidents. You have to try for a morning or afternoon slot up to 30 days in advance. Residents just drive in. They also limit nonres to after 7:30, so the early morning sunrise on the beach is gone, as is sunset.

I love kauai and all of hawaii. However it sounds like paradise lost. To many tourists and the locals got used to having it all to themselves during pandemic. Now looks like the state has ruined the whole aloha tradition and is keeping tourists who keep the islands alive from having a relaxed time instead now a reservation to go anywhere! Really can't say if you want to go snorkeling or to the beach 30 days in advance. If surf is up can't even go in the water. Also forget about trying to get there on high tide on any given day. Basically useless. I predict that when the pandemic is fully in our rear view mirror hawaii will be sorry when we can all go to paradise places all over the world. Only having your boom because only beachy place can go right now. Have a trip planned for next Spring to all the islands. Going to Molikai for first time. May just have to go only there or the big island in future for true hawaii. May just stay home since live in Miami seems better than ever. Never thought hawaii reefs that good just different interesting fish species. Sugar runoff has killed most reefs over the decades already.
Also what is with ROT killing all the ohai trees in weeks. If spreads will kill half of green cover on islands. Along with coming climate change droughts maybe barren rocks some day.

We are visiting Kauai in August 2021 and have tried and tried to get a parking pass and entry pass combo on the Haena State Park reservation site. We go online at 12 am and 12:01 am Hawaii time for last 6 days to make a reservation. As soon as it “opens” it says it is sold out. Clearly they are blocking the parking and park entry pass option to non residents. So… your only option is to reserve the shuttle/park pass option which is three times more expensive. Good job Haena State Park and Hawaii tourism! Keep out us non-residents. We clearly are not welcome in HI. We will not be back! Lots of other beautiful places to hike and visit. We are done.

$30pp to ride a shuttle and enter the park is not worth the expense or experience if you have a big family or party. Our group cost us over $300 for for about 4 hrs of time. That’s absurd! The hike along the coast is great but NOT worth the cost!!!

We got reservations for 5 people 29 days out. No parking available so we were forced to reserve the shuttle from Waipa. Earliest time available was 10 a.m. which put a time crunch on the 9 mile round trip to the falls to be back by 5pm. I honestly thought I screwed up as the cost was $175 for 5 people to ride the shuttle 6 miles and entrance to park. That is a pretty expensive to do a hike. Some parts of the trail are improved, some not so much. Although it had not rained that day, the trail was very muddy, and slick and steep so not just muddy shoes but serious fall hazard. We hike a lot and this was a pretty difficult hike. The trail is reasonably wide and signage is good to the Hanakapi'ai beach. The trail to the falls has far less signage and you can get off track. Trail is such a rutted muddy mess that you spend all of your time looking where you are going to put your feet next and less time taking in the view. People were trying to improve the footing by laying any available sticks and leaves on the trail. The falls and several stream crossing are pretty for sure. My advice is if you are only in Kauai for a week, do not burn a day on this hike. There are plenty of more accessible and less expensive things to do.

My husband went to the Haena State Park for New Years Eve. We got 2 permits to cover the whole day starting at 12pm. Check in and parking was super easy, and the trails clear. We set up our beach chairs and just enjoyed the beach time. With a restricted number of people being allowed to enjoy the park on any given day, made our beach experience more enjoyable as we could settle without anyone impeding our space. I definitely recommend making the trek to this beautiful state park!

The park and ride for $30 PP is well worth it. It’s a narrow road with few single car bridge. So do it! Once you are inside you can also use the bus to move around. We were dropped at Ke”e beach where we swam snorkeled…didn’t do teh hike as its tasking.
We took the bs back about a mile and snorkeled Tunnel beach and hat was fun.
Amazing spot.

Absolutely stunning. The best part of our Kauai vacation (and there were many other great experiences). The hike - Kalalau trail - was wonderful with the most amazing scenic views the entire way. The trail was mostly muddy, so bring appropriate footwear but don't let this stop you from this trail. It's simply amazing and mud can always be washed off. Following our hike, we spent time at Ke'e Beach, which is a great beach for swimming and snorkeling. We took the shuttle and people brought in their coolers, beach chairs etc. We only had our hiking and snorkeling geat with us, which worked out perfectly. Amazing time but make your reservations early. We were lucky to get a spot!

We were last on Kauai in the Fall of 2019 and we were able to drive to Ha’ena State Park and hike the Kalalau trail without any reservations or permits. We visited Kauai in July 2024. You can no longer visit Ha’ena State Park without paying for a parking permit and paying a visitor fee for each person visiting. During our visit no parking permits and no visitor permits were ever available. From reading the other reviews on Trip Advisor you need up to 30 days in advance to get the required permits. You need to purchase two or three parking permits (each permit is only good for four hours) if you plan to be on the trail for more than four hours. To drive up to Ha’ena State Park from Poipu Beach took more than two hours each way (there were five separate road construction sites). Except for knowing to look on the Go Ha’ena website I don’t know how you would know to make these reservations. We lost a day on our vacation so don’t make the same mistake we made!

This review is based on reserving travel to Haena and I am happily looking forward to visiting in July. Neither Hawaii nor its residents are conspiring to keep tourists out. They are merely asking us to respect their land and way of life by planning ahead and working together to make the experience more enjoyable for everybody. This includes reserving your timeslot. Due to popularity, you need to go to the park's reservation website 30 days in advance of your visit day at midnight. Passes sell out within minutes, so date and time flexibility is a must. It is also helpful to try for entry only and find alternate transportation. Options include taxis, private ride shares, and public shuttles. Some of these services remain suspended due to COVID. The people who call this area home are really working to find balance between tourist income and recovering from back to back large scale disasters in the past two years (massive flooding and a pandemic). The park has used that down time to restore many natural features that tourist overcrowding and neglect over the decades has caused and is welcoming people with a daily cap that preserves such restoration and makes for a more pleasant experience for everybody. Thus far, every single person I have been in contact with regarding reservations and transportation has been as helpful as they can given current circumstances. If Haena is it worth seeing, it is worth some work and forethought.

Can someone explain the amount of hiking to get to the waterfalls?

Can we wear good gym shoes like Brooks vs hiking shoes just to do the first 1-2 miles of the trails? And other general hiking in Kauai?

Are any days of the week less crowded than others?
Written January 11, 2024
I would assume weekdays would be less crowded than weekends. We were there on a Thursday in November and yes, there were people there, but I would not characterize it as crowded.

What are the options for getting a ride from Princeville to the Waipa Park and Ride? We got a shuttle from the airport to our lodging in Princeville and a shuttle from the Waipa Parka and Ride to the state park and back, but we're stuck on getting rides between our lodging and the park and ride. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Hāʻena State Park-how and when are you able to buy a pass and parking voucher? I got on this morning Hawaii time(12am) at 6 AM my time and there is nothing available. I have tried and tried. Are people buying them all and up selling them on ebay 😭😭😭
Written July 2, 2021
Tried getting a reservation at 3 am California time , midnight Hawaii time, none available for parking or park entrance 30 days out. It says the shuttle is not running.
Has anyone had any success getting tickets in the last month?
Written June 19, 2021
We are having the same problem. No parking and park pass combination is available and we log online at 12:01 Hawaii time 30 days prior and that selection is X’d out - only the pass only or the shuttle and pass. So non-residents are not able to reserve a parking and pass.
Only way is to get a shuttle and pass and pay 3 times more to get in. I’m hearing a lot of stuff like this for non residents (tourists). We just want to hike in and enjoy the views.
Written August 13, 2021
How was the experience using the shuttle? Is there a price to park your car at the pick up point?
Written January 26, 2020
Went from Princeville at the golf course. $15.00 parking fee. Found out you can drive all the way to Tunnels and park with no fee, as long as you park legally, the day after we arrived and had already paid. Ke’e beach at the end of the road, requires shuttle or parking pass. It’s beautiful.

We plan to visit Ha'ena State Park mid September and found the parking passes all sold out. We are thinking of taking the shuttle after parking at Waipa. Does anyone know of the parking situation at the Waipa Park and Ride and if there is adequate parking?
Written August 28, 2019
We hiked the trail on 28 Sept and it was fine. The views are great but it is a workout. There's a recent hawaii magazine article titled what-visitors-need-know-about-reopened-haena-state-park that you may want to look up
Written September 30, 2019
Has anyone taken the shuttle or tried parking at Limahuli Garden and Preserve which seems to be across the street? The parking passes look to be sold out for our desired visit on Sept 10 or 11.
