One star is being generous. We felt like we were in a bad movie. Lines of people being herded around like trained seals. Lame commentary on the boat "Look at this tree, look at this mountain" was terrible and was aimed at the lowest possible common denominator. Fern Grotto was disappointing since there is no access to the grotto itself... More

Wow was this awful. We went there 12 years ago and could walk around, up to everything, and now, it's all boarded over, rails, and there's nothing to see, too overgrown (and not with ferns). I wouldn't waste my time.

You take a boat ride out to the fern grotto. The boat ride was very pretty. Once you get to the fern grotto there is hula dancing with singing. You have time to take pictures of the fern grotto. On the boat ride back there was more hula and singing and they teach you a hula dance. The whole experience... More

Don't be deceived by the marketing pictures. The fern grotto is no longer dripping with those long, beautiful ferns, and you can no longer go up into the grotto...you stand below on a landing & look up into it. when the boat stops, it's a very short walk to the grotto. If you do this tour just for the boat... More

We toured the Fern Grotto as part of our North Shore Tour on June 17, 2013 on Kauai. The boat ride was enjoyable and we were entertained by a local family singing group that included 2hula dancers. I did not realize how fluid one's movements needed to be for a good dancer, but their movements tell a story along with... More

Not worth the $20 or the time it took. You could have been doing something better! We saw better sights EVERY where else. Very cheesy. Really? Hawaiian's named Smith? Do not go! Spend your money on another tour!

If you don't want to expend a lot of energy, then do the fern grotto. The barge ride is smooth. Traveling along the river is pretty. Once we landed, a short walk will take you to a deck where you can look up the cliff to the ferns growing upside down. The grotto used to be open, but no longer.... More

What a neat idea! We walked the grounds until it was tome to board the river boat. It was about a 20 minute ride to the grotto. I understand that a hurricane wiped out a lot of the ferns but it was still pretty. On the way back there were hula dancers and Hawaiian singing and even a hula lesson!... More

We had toured this attraction 8 years ago and you could walk up to the mouth of the cave. Now you can only go to a platform 40-50 ft away so it wasn't as neat to see. For the money we paid as a family, I would say it isn't worth it. The Captain was knowledgeable but not very enthusiastic.... More

We took the Smith's boat trip to the grotto. The boat, the crew and entertainers were wonderful but were surprised that when we arrived at the grotto we did not enter the cave, as we had during a previous visit.
