Only accessible by water, the fern grotto is a beautiful garden. It boasts of different flower-bearing plants with the grotto itself having hanging ferns. The short cruise was entertaining, along with a hawaiian presentation at the grotto. Even without the mini-show, it was still worth visiting if just to walk around the sanctuary and discover beautiful flora.

The fern grotto is lovely. It's been wiped out and grown back a couple times. There's a big wood deck to stand and look at the grotto. It's just lost some of its luster. Smiths has definitely gone way down hill. The boat is safe and the entertainment is ok. We've gone before years ago and this definitely is not... More

This was our first stop on our kayak trip up river to the Secret Falls. There was a dock for regular boats to access land (which was too high for kayak access). However, in the kayaks we had to be creative. We found a shallow area and climbed out near by. It really wasn't that bad, but plan to get... More

We took the last boat of the day. It was a nice ride. It take a little walking to get to the fern grotto. About as long as a football field. My mom who is 78 made it ok. Was up hill going. But an easy walk back to the boat. Was touristy

Although not majestic like some places on Kauai, Fern Grotto is worth the time. If you book both the boat ride and the Smith's Family Luau, you'll get a discount, and it is a nice side trip before the luau. The Wailua River isn't that impressive as a river, but views of the forest on the shore makes it feel... More

I went on a cruise ship excursion. The excursion took a boat ride up the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto. The walk from the river to the grotto goes through rain forest and is very scenic. the grotto itself is well worth visiting. i wish you could go inside the grotto, but due to the danger of a rock... I have taken this "tour" so many times that I can practically do the talk story oh the way up and back. But, it is a great little outing for those that have never been, and for one reason or another I always end up having a good time. Just make sure and have bug spray or get some wipes... More

We went to the grotto by boat and walked along an easy path to the Fern Grotto. While at the site we had a local girl sing a song.

Gorgeous, relaxing place on the island! The boat tour included music, hula, and history of the area. Great trip!

We cruised up the river to the grotto and were given a great explanation of the fern grotto plus several songs accompanied by ukuleles. Great relaxing time. You don't want to miss this.
