There is too much controversy over the falls. Not only do you have to trespass through someones yard to get there you also have to trespass on over a mile of private road. There are even residents who patrol the road to turn you around. It is a sacred site to the Hawaiian people and a conservation area. People aren't even... More

The confrontation my family and I had with the locals could not have been more dangerous. We were driving along the supposedly PUBLIC road to the supposedly PUBLIC attraction when we were flagged down by a friendly looking old man. However, looks can be decieving. He immiediately began screaming, cursing and yelling at us to "get off his land" (He... More

My wife and I visited Helele'ike'oha Falls (aka Blue Pool) many years ago, apparently just before the controversy exploded. It was beautiful, but given the events of the last few years I have to advise people to just stay away. Not only are you trespassing, but it also is not safe. Ulaino Rd is a public road up until about... More

We followed Maui Revealed (GREAT guide book) to get here - blissfully unaware of the potential dangers. If we had read the reviews here first, we might not have gone, but in the end, it was worth it to us, as it was the most stunning of any of the waterfalls off Hana Hwy. We went on a weekday, early... the road to hana is an experience that is not to be rushed, in fact it cant be done in one day! With that said choose your stops carefully. the blue pool is one not to miss, but tread lightly this is the private history of the hawaiian people and most dont want visitors to go there. i recomend you... After a great drive up to Hana with exceptional sights along the way, we were excited to see the renowned Blue Pool. Unfortunately we had not read all the reviews or the papers from 2007 describing the ongoing battle the locals and property owners are having with the tourists and state regarding access to this fantastic natural resource. I agree... More

Yes, I must admit this was not an easy place to find. I too was concerned about the "no trespassing" signs and seemingly endless distance but it was surely worth the trip. It was one the most memorable experiences ever! It was definitaly worth all the effort! The fact that it was such an effort to find made it all... More

Ok, it is like this. Don't drive a 'tourist' car. Carry a lei or a single flower as an offering. Wear a sincere smile and love in your heart. Leave nothing but your footprints. The part of Maui which is still quite full of Hawaiian people is Hana. Yes, there's some ha'ole nut jobs out there - rumor is that... More

We just got back from driving the Road to Hana....all day. We were using a "Lonely Planet" book from 2004, and after so many years, it was still very accurate!! There was only one section of the book where we became confused....the section about the "Blue Pool." As we headed down the dirt road that our guidebook directed us towards... More

Just returned from a trip to Hawaii, Maui and Oahu (loved Maui could have skipped Oahu..). We of course did the Road to Hana drive. The drive overall is beautiful and definately worth it. We, along with everyone else, decided to try to go to the Blue Pool. As we were driving in we saw the first main sign that... More
