This is definitely not recommended unless you are an extremely good driver and it is certainly not for the feint of heart. Although the scenery is beautiful, there is a seven miles stretch of road that is one lane along the cliff with rock walls on the other side. The catch is that it is two way traffic. We had... More

We decided to take this highway as an alternate way to get the airport for our evening flight. While my mother thought we were going to die during the first few miles when the road was really narrow, we asked a bunch of locals at a pullout if the road got better, and then said yes. They were right, the... More

Drove this counterclockwise from the airport town back to Lahaina. The road to Hana is tame compared to this. At least 4-8 miles is mostly single lane with a drop off on one side and the jungle on the other. Lots of tight 180 switchbacks. You'll want a drink after this (if you are the driver).

Extremely dangerous single lane road if you meet an incoming vehicle. The positive reviewers probably did not, or made the other vehicle back up. Reversing hundreds of feet next to a deadly cliff is not fun. Dumb tourists carry on.

The wife and I drove this beauty and she usually hates winding roads, but loved it! Stunning scenery. Slow pace with frequent stops to check out the view and snap some pics. Absolutely worth it. We drove from east to west, so not the typical direction, and found the flow very nice so she was on the view side. Plenty... More

I drove this road on Feb 12 2017 and all I can say is the views are amazing , absolutely stunning. Driving through the little town half way through (can't remember the name of it ) is like a movie scene of a sleepy town where time has never touched. However be WARNED the road at points is enough to... More

I have to agree with the other reviewers advising NOT to be scared away from taking this drive. It is not inherently dangerous as long as you drive with the same common sense I hope most drivers use. In a mid-sized SUV, I made the trip clockwise and because of all the warnings and scary stories never intended to go... More

Not much I can add that others haven't already said. We took the route out of ignorance driving from Wailuku to the blowhole. Surprise! If you want to travel an insanely beautiful coastal goat trail masquerading as a highway, this is the road for you. Blind one lane hairpin turns with a several hundred foot drop to the ocean. It... This route was simply stunning...the views of the ocean against the black mountains, or red mountains- simply stunning. The problem is that the two lane road suddenly turns into a one lane road with only a tiny sign that say " narrow road for 8 miles". We thought narrow meant that it would still be two lanes.....NOPE! We were driving... More

We made this drive today and thoroughly enjoyed it. We'd almost been put off making the trip after reading reviews on here and we're so glad we didn't. Perhaps Americans have different ideas as to what a 'scary drive' entails, but most confident drivers who live in Europe really shouldn't be put off by the comments some have made. I've... More
