We thoroughly enjoyed the drive. The scenery was awesome! The place where we stayed said it was "not recommended" to drive there, but others said it was not a problem. Since we do a lot of travelling in the Western states, we are accustomed to a lot of curve backroads and decided to go ahead. Of course, there were places... More

On our final day in Maui, we decided to drive this road. This was not an easy decision, because I had seen a few reviews here on TA and on other websites that described this highway as perilous and unsafe. However, I thought that perhaps those reviews were left by people who were uncomfortable drivers at baseline, and as I... More

Awesome drive great views. It did pour rain at some points causing some small washouts, but just take it slow and your good to go. All the people who scream and cried in their reviews must live in a bubble, enjoy life folks!

The scenery on this road is cool. However you kind of pay for it. A little nerve racking on this road since there are a lot of single car width road and a cliff on one side. It is difficult when another car comes up and both need to squeeze by each other.

I just completed the entire Maui figure 8, starting and ending in Wailuku. I drove highway 340 in a counterclockwise direction, despite the advice of others and boy am I glad I chose the opposite way. To start, as long as you're not driving like a mad man, you shan't worry about the tire edge facing the cliff side. The... More

LOL ... I may regret giving this "activity" such a high rating, because the other comments are certainly true. Successfully completing the drive yields a stop at a nice gift shop where you can get a T-shirt with a cool picture of a guy driving a car with his hair standing on end, his eyes bugging out, and his knuckles... The drive around west Maui is beautiful. While the roads are pretty narrow in places, going clockwise puts you on the inside of the hill if you need to navigate a tight passing situation.

If you are are not comfortable driving on narrow 1 lane roads, with turnouts, have someone else drive. This road is less traveled than the well-known Hana Highway, but it more than makes up for it views and hikes. The conventional wisdom is to traverse this in a clockwise direction from the Lahina side (this will put you against the... More

I re-visited this road since my previous review - this is beautiful but will be scary or even terrifying for most people. This is a unique road with special qualities - possibly too special for many. You do not even need to drive on the scary part to see most of what the north shore of West Maui has to... More

Many of the comments are accurate: scary, dangerous, poorly maintained section of road....definately not a relaxing, comfortable family driving route. However, being up about 1000 feet in elevation the views are breathtaking. Should you decide to go ensure you have a proper vehicle, a camera, and passengers that are trusting of your driving.
