Incredible scenery for first 1.5 miles at least

The trail begins along the shore after the small parking lot then goes on under the shade of trees and suddenly turns into a sun drenched, rocky road into a lunar setting.... Very nice hike if done during a cloudy day but if the sun is shining, be prepared to suffer from heat. Have very sturdy shoes to avoid injuries.... More

We went to hike the only trail that wasn’t closed on the south side of Maui, where our time share was. The King’s Highway trail also known as Hoapili, the governor that helped reclaim some of it to allow hikers access. Leaving from La Perouse Bay, the trail was the highway for Hawaiian travel over 100 years ago. It had... More

This is a great alternative if you want to hike in a lava field without trekking all the way to Haleakala crater. The trailhead for the Kihei part starts in the LaPerouse Bay parking lot. You start out in a lava field then go along some shrubby area near a couple of beaches and then its like you landed on... More

I have led hikes along this route dozens of times and know it very well. This dry, barren area was once dotted with Hawaiian fishing villages, and has archaeological and cultural sites that can be hard to make out unless you know what you are looking at. These include several dwelling places, a canoe shelter, one of the largest known... More

Despite of mass tourism, Maui offers some very easy (and free of charge) possitilities to walk or hike without guide. One of easiest possibilities is old Hoapili Trail or King's Trail. Old trail can be walked South (Kihei area) or East (Hana area). We walked both coastlines: there are different views. South trail is across lava fields. It is harder... More

There were a group of 8 of us that did this early morning hike. We wanted to get done before it got to hot because there is no shade once you get into the lava field. We went as far as the large coral beach. From there the trail head was hard to find and we turned back around. Overall... More
