Spent the day at the North Shore, you have to see the waves to really believe it. Bonsai pipeline and the surfers were a sight to behold. 20-30ft waves. Highly recommend renting a car to go see the spectacular scenes.

This was much more of what I was expecting when going to Hawaii. A small beach town with good waves, fun places to eat and cute shops. A scenic drive from Waikiki Beach.

Summer tends to have smaller waves on the North Shore. You still do have to deal with a pretty good rip-tide so beware. Winter is when the waves are the best for the North Shore.
