I was lucky enough to be staying in Makiki and this trail was within walking distance. The trail guide calls this hike "a pleasant, shady loop" and rates it a moderate hike. I found it very challenging but well worth the effort. The trail rises up to 800 ft in elevation gain for a 1200 ft summit. In other words... More

Compared to the other trails, there is no grand view at the end of Moleka Trail. Instead, by hiking this trail, you will feel the elevation changes which will eventually lead you to a bamboo forest.

I was in the city without a car, and so had to get to hikes either on bus or by foot. Manoa falls was particularly muddy when I went, but this set of hikes wasn't crowded, nor was there much mud to speak of. (I did this hike in July.) I liked that there were many different options ... and... More

Looking to have some fun in the afternoon, my friend and I decided to take the dogs for a hike. It was hot so we wanted a shaded one that wasn't too strenuous as one dog isn't so coordinated. So Makiki Valley Loop trail we went. This trail offers a lot of nice things for a nice afternoon hike. A... More

I wanted to get outdoors for an easy hike and found this one listed. We easily found the parking lot as the directions from google maps took us right there. The trail was clearly marked and we set out. Immediately we were going up in elevation and the trail kept going. I didn't see as much water as I would... More

If you want to get into the rainforest, this is a great hike. It's not especially strenuous, but it can be muddy and slippery at times. When I went on a Thursday over the noon hour, there was nobody on the trail except me. Take water, your camera, a rainproof jacket or poncho and water resistant shoes!

Makiki Valley area offers a trail system comprises of over 10 interlinked trails. If you go to Yelp Oahu you will be able to find several independently listed trails. The most noticeable one is probably the Makiki Valley loop trail. Directions on Yelp is quite accurate. You can find information and trail map on Na Ala Hele website. Makiki Valley... More

This is an excellent hiking area in the mountains not far from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. Very beautiful with a remote feeling but only minutes from civilization. Trails are marked for different levels of ability. Easy to more difficult.

Makiki state recreation area is tough to find. Once you find the gravel parking area, on the left just before a green gate closes off the road, finding the trailhead is easy. Go past the green gate and the trailhead starts on the right, just behind the bathrooms. We went to the right first and continued around the loop. The... More

As part of the Puu Ualakaa state park there are many trails around. After enjoying the viewpoint we drove back to the entrance, where the main gate is and parked in the small parking spot. You can choose your trail there. Begin at the ualakaa trail and after half a mile it turns into the Makiki trail, after a junction... More
