- Stephanie D6 contributionsDangerous. Full of criminalsVery dangerous never go here. We were approached in the medina and given directions, then we were followed and let into the tannery. Total scam!! They gave us a tour and then led us to a shop where we were locked in with several men demanding money. We had to hand over €200 then we were allowed leave and the lad who led us in in the first place was waiting outside with more men demanding more money. Complete criminals never experienced anything like itVisited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 29, 2023
- Douglas SEdinburgh, United Kingdom11 contributionsMarrakech Tanneries - massive scam avoid!!Read Jenny's review below, we experienced exactly the same. The tanneries should be avoided as they are a massive scam. It's a very slick scam though as we had 3 different people involved in handing us off then got asked to pay at the end. At the end we were asked for 100 dirams each but we gave a firm response and said that they could have 20dirhams as that was all we had. We then marched quickly off. Pretty threatening and was rubbish, they stared all very friendly but it all quicky change. We'd expected to be able to walk away as so often happens but not here the tone was menacing. IF you must go, go by yourself and don't speak to anyone as they are all connected and will gang up against you taking you to small spaces where it's hard to get out.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten April 18, 2023

- Matthias M4 contributionsDon’t go with nice strangers ;)Scam. Basically what everybody else here described: When you’re north of the big market some young guy tells you something about the last day of a festival with gerbers coming from the mountains / roads closed and so on. He wants to show you the way, you say no, another guy appears with a piece of leather and guy1 says guy2 lives next to the festival and is going there anyways. Once you’re there they show you the place they make leather then bring you into a leather shop. Once they realize you won’t buy anything, they get pissed, you leave and all the other guys are waiting for you in front of the store, demanding money. I didn’t give them any so they followed me half way back to the market yelling at me. Guess I should have listened to my gut once the first guy started with ‘I don’t want anything from you, no money no honey’. On the plus side: If you like a breeze of adrenaline you should definitely go there ;)Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten September 4, 2023
- Glen v1 contributionDanger to tourists, AVOID! Visited here from the UK.Although our stay has been amazing and found the people of Marrakesh to be very welcoming and helpful, just one place is letting it all down. The Tanneries, the people here take advantage of the treatment to tourists received from most of the people which takes your guard down as you are treated like the tourist is king. We have had exactly the same experience as all the bad reviews. People working together snatching tourists looking for the tanneries in what feels like a very unsafe uncomfortable area especially as there are no other tourists and all eyes are on you. We made it to the tanneries and after being shown around gave 100dr as a tip the (apparent) manager who was very welcoming and friendly and at first refused the money but as we had paid for other attractions we felt it only fair as he had spent time with us explaining and taking pictures. After we finished he wanted to show us the end product where we were led to a shop down the road, unlike the other parts of town where if you said no they listened even in the souks, so felt confident everything would be ok. However it was very difficult to get out of the very deep shop and especially with the number of people by the door, so we thought lets buy some leather slippers for my daughter and forget the whole thing but after getting him down from £60 to £30 he wasn’t having any of it and it still wasn’t enough apparently so the shop keeper (the Berber) turned to items of my clothing which I warned him it ain’t happening. Eventually after buying the slippers we made it outside where we were met with a large group of about 10 men with the manager of the tannery saying we had not given enough and wanted more money, another 100dr which I gave just to avoid the situation which I think was a small price to pay as no one would have come to our rescue as me and my wife where heavily outnumbered. I hate to think what would have happened if we hadn’t enough as you can see from other reviews not good. This is a well organised scam, I wouldn’t mind if they were up front and said look there is charge to show you round and would have paid more than I gave but to use aggressive tactics will just make people avoid the area.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 27, 2023

So we didn't go on any organised tour, and got "scammed". This is how it works :
Guy1 see us looking at map -- says "go to the tanneries, its the only day that the guys from the Atlas mountains are down this month"
You nod, and carry-on walking
A bit further, guy 2 says virtually says the same thing... shows pictures on his phone... takes us to the the end of the alley, points and says "its just over over....in fact, that guy over there works there.... he'll take you !"
Guy3 starts walking us to the tanneries. Good English, starts talking about football. The walk, is longer than the "just over there" point. Wifey gets nervous...guy 3 shows more photos, and completely says his not a guide, doesn't need payment...just a smile.
SOOOO, here's where my logic should kick-in. How random is that guy2 just "spots" someone who "works" at the tanneries who happens to be walking by... some 10-15 mins away from the work ? Also, do the tanneries workers have that good English, and those nice clothes ? And finally, why does someone instantly have videos and photos of the place in full glory on their phone ? (no searching)
OK, carrying on walking.. guy 3 makes quick call. Then in a few minutes (in a non-tourist part of town), we arrive... tall guy waiting with mint for our noses -- although smell wasn't so bad at that time --. This is a set-up. He's introduced as the "manager", guy 3 leaves, shakes our hands.
So then we're shown the tanneries .. its the end of the day... not a lot to see.. just some skins and concrete vats full of liquid. The "Tour" lasts all of 2 minutes. AND we were not expecting a Tour with the MintGuy Manager...it was pitched as the equivalent of a market you could just walkaound.
Anyway, then Mintguy, starts taking us to another place up an alley.. not sure what...looking at reviews was probably a shop to sting us. Wifey is now going mental at me... so we call it short an walk away. He then says "You pay ... the workers !". We offer 20MAD (about £2)...he says no no no..,.pay 200MAD. We say we've not got anything else, and give him 100MAD and scarper.
Reading other reviews, I think we were lucky that we were in the open road, not near the shop, so no others could threaten us..only Mintguy.
If you're rrading this review BEFORE you go, then take heed. Funnily enough we were never propositioned again.. suspect we didn't look as green as minute 1, day1, which we were ....or they recognised us, and ignored.
Its a shame to some degree- as the tanneries COULD be interesting, and COULD be a legit tourist place.... but these scams ruin it..
We got off lightly, and I'd wished I'd read this BEFORE.
Live and learn !

Don't Go!
My husband & I got 'tricked' into going to this place. A 'friendly guy' told us that the Berbers were there for only a day & that we should go and see.
He said he was walking to the tanneries and would help us find our way there so we followed him. After walking for about 10 mins we were 'passed over' to an old man who shoved mint in our faces and asked us to go inside.
We stayed for 2mins the smell was unbearable. The 'friendly guy' then showed up and said he would take us to a shop where they sold the leather goods we went inside and the shop keeper tried to sell us a leather belt for MAD800! The belt was not good quality & we refused to buy it and left the shop.
Outside waiting was the old man and the 'friendly guy'. The immediately asked my husband for money MAD 200 for showing us the way. There were no other tourists in site and we were far away from the main souks. There was another man that joined them on a motorcycle. The men started shouting & intimidating us so my husband gave them MAD 100. We continued to walk away, but they shouted it wasn't enough money & followed us. We did not know where we were going & were completely lost. It was scary & intimidating the men were still following us. I felt afraid & gave another MAD 100. After that they left us alone.
It completely ruined my impression of Morocco. There should be a police presence in this area. I wish I read the other reviews before we ventured out!

The tanneries ended up being a stressful and scary experience for us. As with the other reviews we were tricked into going there with a promise of one day colour festival just round the corner. One lad mentioned it and we said thank you and went the opposite direction, then someone else mentioned it just pointing the way. We started walking in that direction then someone else offered to show us the way then handed us over to someone else who happened to be walking that way. The last lad spoke good English and chatted away to distract us from questioning how far we were walking, you don’t want to be rude so you keep walking and before you know it you are at the stinking tanneries and handed over to a toothless revolting man who gave us a tour that we didn’t ask for. I was literally feeling sick from the heat and stink and was not interested at all and was just thinking how the hell do we get out of this. We then got taken to an air conditioned shop selling leather goods and paid lip service to the shop keeper who quickly realized he wasn’t going to sell anything to us so quickly turned not ‘so friendly’. We exited the shop to find toothless outside saying follow me this way at which point we had really had enough. My husband thrust a note in his hand which clearly wasn’t enough and he demanded 20 euros each - we then just legged it in the opposite direction which was scary as we had to go into an alley not knowing where we would end up. Lucky for us it came out onto a main road to safety- he followed us there swearing at us but eventually gave up. We didn’t lose any money or were physically assaulted so genuinely feel lucky compared to some of the other reviews I have read. Literally do not listen or trust anyone on the street, shopkeeper or not - I think they are all in it together as a shop keeper the next day started telling us about “the one day mixing of the spices” - I nearly laughed hysterically at him - keep your wits about you and sadly don’t engage with anyone on the streets

Avoid this area and anyone who tries to show you the way to a one day only event! We’re both well travelled and thought we could spot a scam so we’re not sure how we fell for this. We were on our way to the souks when a man stopped us to tell us we should walk on the right and asked if we’d heard about the colour festival, a once a year event. He pointed us in the general direction and went on with his day. We later realised he must have been part of this elaborate scam.
We were then stopped by another man who also suggested we walk on the right and mentioned the colour festival. He said it wasn’t far and would take us a little bit of the way. We bumped into someone he knew after a few minutes who he said was working there and would take us, it was only left, then right, then left.
We continued for a while, both saying a few times that we weren’t sure, or we were too hot, or asked how much longer and he said almost there. It was around 40 degrees so we really didn’t want to continue but somehow felt we couldn’t get out of it. We genuinely believed he was taking us to a colour festival and that we may have to pay him something for showing us the way.
He started to mention taking us to ‘smell leather’ after the ‘party’. We then assumed he worked for a leather seller near where the festival was held and we would be expected to go there and consider buying something. The journey continued endlessly until we were led through a large, black metal gate to a huge, filthy looking area with several men. In that moment I genuinely expected the gate to slam shut and to be murdered! Thankfully they wanted to show us how leather is made but it was a horrible, dirty, smelly place and as a vegetarian I really didn’t want to be there.
They asked us to have a look at everything and take photos but was awful and we showed no interest. We were thankfully allowed to leave and were taken by the same man who led us through the streets, to a leather shop. We were greeted by a very friendly, welcoming man who asked us to look at carpets, bags, etc. and also asked us to go upstairs so he could show us more things. There were other tourists there so we think he wanted to get us away from them. We said we were happy to just look around and when he realised we weren’t too interested he quickly changed his tone and the way he looked at us. We looked around and didn’t see anything we wanted so we walked out.
We were met outside by the man who led us there and the man who introduced us to him earlier. They both said we owed 200 dirhams each for the ‘tour’, about £20 each! We said we had nothing with us and they got very aggressive. Another man passing in the street angrily said that we should give the man the money we owed him. We didn’t want the tour, we didn’t want to be there and the colour festival made up. We were so far from where we wanted to be, suffering in the 40 degree heat and scared. We managed to get away with giving him around £5 and basically running away.
We understand that people need to make a living there and struggle and we’d have been happy to give him something for showing us the way to a genuine event or to visit a shop and considering buying something but these people were just awful, agressive con artists. Even if we had wanted a tannery tour, we would not have expected to have gone somewhere so disgusting and wouldn’t have paid £20 each for it. Baring in mind we paid £23 for a trip to the desert, with a short camel ride and then dinner with traditional music.
It was a horrible experience, it ruined our last day in Marrakech and I felt on the verge of heat stroke from walking so much in the middle of the day, in that heat. It hasn’t put me off returning to the city but sadly I wouldn’t trust anyone there. We later bumped into another man who asked us if we knew about the colour festival and said he could take us there! We said ‘no thanks, we’ve already been’!
I wish there was a way to search trip advisor for the least recommended places in a city but there doesn’t appear to be. If you read this review before you visit please avoid this area and people like those I mentioned and recommend avoiding it to anyone you know who is planning to travel to Marrakech.

Certainly an educational experience, but compromised by overly pushy site boss, and demanding sales pitch for poor quality goods in one shop. Better quality to be found in Souk in most stalls.

c'è qualche guida locale che organizza un tour alle Tanneries? Letti i commenti precedenti preferirei non andare soli. Sapete anche i prezzi? Grazie

Where is the nearest tannery to the medina

I agree with the above posts. The tanneries whilst interesting and rather smelly are not worth the hassle you will get in trying to find them and more importantly the sales tactics which are the most aggressive in Marrakech.
