The guides don't tell you that this Cathedral is built on top of the old slave trading floor, and the altar built on top off the old whipping post used to punish unruly slaves. The slave trade was closed due to David Livingstone handing his...More

I would definitely rate this as a must-do in Stone Town to experience the effects of slavery. The history is well detailed and the prison chambers does really give a sense of the horror that the slaves must have experienced. The cathedral is also surprisingly...More

In interesting and informative displays, the Slave Museum told us about a whole other part of the slave trade. The Museum, right in the middle of Stone Town, is a must.

Simply put this a must see and must experience. There truly isn't much to see but the guide covers the entire history expertly living one wound in genuine thought ranging over many topics. Q&A session before the room of informative displays adds extra clarity. Very...More

Went thinking there shall be lots to see and visit, but there wasn't much apart from the small room where slaves were kept. Not a must to visit, but if interested in history.. theres an aisle of stories.

Hello, I am interested in visiting a historical tour in Tanzania that is closely associated with the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, you gave an awesome review of the Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral Stonetown,. I am staying in Nairobi, Kenya. My question to you is do you recommend we get a hotel while out there? Or would you recommend I look for something closer in Tanzania? This is on the island of Zanzibar, and my mom doesn't do too well with water... so I was thinking of Tanzania... What are your thoughts? Thank you so much !

Hello, Sorry this is a late reply, yes we do recommend you get a hotel in zanzibar, it will be hard to do a tour and travel back to mainland tanzania on the same day.
