Mozambique’s southern province of Maputo is home to this reserve, a sandy and humid habitat that is still working to replenish its wildlife population that was destroyed in 1970s civil wartime.

We were with a group of 5 and we loved it. We had accomodation at an eco-lodge and I will definitely go back there everytime I'm in Mozambique. I won't write much more about this hidden paradise....

Please note you must have a 4x4 to get to Milibangala. The roads are tarred in South Africa to the border post at Kosi Bay, from there it's all sand roads, or heavily eroded, possibly civil war damaged formerly tar roads. Watch where the locals drive, that's the safest route. We set up camp at Ponta Milibangalal. You can fish,... More

This is a special reserve. It might not be for long, so get here before it changes! I can't say it's unspoilt nature, because it was all spoiled by decades of civil war. But now that it has been rehabilitated, those years of trauma now mean that it is left pretty much in peace to regenerate, and regenerate it has!... More

The Maputo Special Reserve is raising from ashes! Animal re-introduction is being very successful and vigorous anti-poaching activities has seen a major decrease of poaching in recent years. The fencing is almost complete and now with the improved road from Maputo, access to the reserve will be within 1 hour! Now, don't expect souvenier and merchandising shops at every corner.... More

You do need a good car and a driver. Our driver didn't know how to drive and got us stuck. Everyone helped get us out, including the chief of the park. Thank you. Considering this is within 2 hrs from Maputo, the size of the animal population is quite amazing!

Having traveled Southern Africa fairly extensively and read all the reports on this reserve, we were somewhat disappointed. We didn't see much game (a few bokkies) but this was expected. The bird life was very disappointing with very little seen. Scenery I thought was very average. Varied between rolling grassland, coastal scrub and coastal forest. We drove through the reserve... Trademarks are the elephants. Also hippos, giraffes and a bunch of herbivores. There are a few lodges, nice but basic camping site, and beautifull beaches.

It felt like we had the whole reserve to ourselves, hardly seeing any other cars throughout our 3 days of game drives. Though there aren't any big predators, we saw loads of Elephants and an array of Antelope, Zebra, and more. The roads definitely require a 4x4 but the steep sandy paths add to the experience. Hard to believe it's... More

We travelled as a group of friends camping. Arrived at the edge of a lake late evening and set up to wake up in the morning to beautiful views of the lake. Plenty of bird life to view while having breakfast before breaking camp and going on the another camp site which was within walking distance to the beach. Spent... More
