Daan Viljoen Game Park.Just 24 km west of Windhoek lies a sanctuary for a relatively large population of game species typical of Namibia's highlands. Proclaimed before Independence to preserve the ecosystem of the Khomas Hochland, the park was named after a former Administrator, Mr Daan Viljoen, who played a major part in establishing the park. The convenient location of the park makes Daan Viljoen an ideal venue for day visits and a perfect stopover for tourists seeking the tranquillity of the bush.FACT FILEPark size: 40 km2Year proclaimed: 1968Natural features: Khomas Hochland Plateau, scenic views of the Windhoek valleyVegetation: Highland shrubland, with various Acacia species, kudu bush (Combretum apiculatum) and buffalo thorn (Ziziphus mucronata).Wildlife: Mammals are springbok, kudu, eland, gemsbok, blue wildebeest, Hartmann's mountain zebra, leopard and klipspringer. We always visit Daan Viljoen when we have family/friends visiting from overseas. It's conveniently located a mere 20 km out of town and offers a short game viewing route and a hiking trail. You won't find the big five, but you are likely to see a good variety of game. We usually take a picknick lunch and stop at one... More

Visited Daan Viljoen nature reserve in July with my wife. Situated about 20km to the West of Windhoek, clearly sign posted from the City centre and one straight road through. Upon arrival you are met at the gates by a member of staff who takes your details and hands you a letter with the park rules and regulations. You then... More

This is a great spot to visit for the day or to go camping over the weekend. Beautiful spots to stay and some great hikes where you can see wildlife too. Would definitely recommend going if you have a spare day in Windhoek and looking to keep the safari vibe alive!

We had a lovely hike this morning. Didn't see any animals but lots of interesting insects. We took our own drinks due to the comments about prices on Trip Advisor. There is an entry fee payable per person and per car.

We hiked the 9km trail at Daan Viljoen. Very nice walk, some steep sections. Good view of Windhoek. The gate opens at 06h00 in the morning so you can go early when it is still cool. There is a map of the trail, and the trail is fairly well marked with arrows and rods. The pool is a great ending... More

As we had a day free before our Etosha Safari, we visited the Daan Viljoen Nature Reserve. Not knowing the place we decided to go on a game drive, only my wife and me. What an experience!!!! Our driver-guide was very well informed and experienced pointing out many species of animals on the three hour experience. When in Windhoek again,... More
