If you want to get an insight into the daily life of Rwandans and explore hidden streets you would probably never come across alone, then the Walking Tour organized by TTA is the perfect thing for you to do. I enjoyed every minute of the tour which took us around 3 hours. Placide, who has lived his whole life in the local neighorhood (the area is called Gikondo), and Hazel, a current volunteer, guided us through the small streets of the area and pointed out many interesting things I didn´t know before. We made quite a few stops (local market, women´s cooperative, art gallery,...) and tasted local food/drinks (sugar cane, sambusas, milk bar). In the end we had lunch at TTA, where you could also meet the members of TTA, mostly women with physical disabilities, who weave incredibly beautiful baskets. The atmosphere at TTA is simply great and they make you feel welcome from the first minute on. I can totally recommend a visit while you are in Kigali!

We had such an enjoyable and informative day on this tour today. Our guides Placide & Hazel were great hosts and shared their knowledge of Rwanda/Kigali. It was fascinating to see local working life away from the City and get chance to sample some of the local food. After our tour we tried our hand at basket making, which was good fun and made me realise how talented the ladies are. I have complete admiration for them! I can’t recommend this tour enough during your visit to Kigali, itcwill give you at great insight into the daily lives of the local people.

An absolute must when visiting Kigali, Placide guided us through the local streets, introducing us to the local people and their daily life. Stopped to taste the local food/drink and meet some inspirational women who spend their days making local crafts. Then back to the centre for lunch (homemade) and was taught by Emily how to weave, which was incredible, I need a bit more training, but the women were creating these masterpieces with skill... can’t recommend this day enough!

Thank you so much, we are very grateful you have visited TTA and we will be happy to see you again! The basket weaving is difficult indeed and needs a lot of practice. But the final product is worth it :)

Talking Through Art (TTA) is a non-profit art gallery with wonderful female artisans on site creating beautiful unique woven art and useful woven products. TTA supports local, handicapped women artisans. There is also an optional 3-4 hour hilly walking tour through the local neighborhood (much of it impoverished) with approximately 6 stops for local food snacks/drinks and shopping. The tour is very educational and safe and is led by a wonderful young man who grew up and still lives in the neighborhood. The cost of the tour is approximately $17 USD and includes the food and drink stops. Bring your walking shoes, a camera, a water bottle and some Rwandan francs, because you will want to make some purchases along the way and at TTA gallery. This is an enlightening visit and a ray of sunshine on any visit to Kigali.

A wonderful and very worthwhile project that has a real family feel and warmth. The local area makes for a pleasant and interesting walk and feels very village like. My attempt at basket weaving quickly made me realize just how skilled the women are to produce such incredible designs and such high quality products. A highly recommended day.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Talking Through Art walking tour. The tour allowed me to walk the roads where the people of Rwanda live and get a glimpse of the neighborhood and how the community works. My tour guide was a lovely young man who was knowledgeable of the area and curious about other cultures and communities.
The weaving that was done by the local women was outstanding. I only wish I had more room in my suitcase!
I highly recommend this tour.

Beautiful gallery with shop in a nice and calm area of Kigali. If you are lucky, you can even meet the women while there are working on their baskets. It is a very cool experience. I would 100% recommend to visit TTA

Learnt about this NGO which supports about 80 disabled people in an effort to make them more independent. NGO started by Petr Kocnar from Prague to help disabled people gain new skills, confidence and a place in the job market. Their main activity is training them in basket weaving and craft making. Once the product is completed the people receive an above marker price for their product, even when it is not sold yet. Next to this they also organise 3-hour walking tours through the area of Gikondo. In 3 hours time one gets an insight in the culture, history and daily life of Gikondo. Tour includes local snacks like Chapatis and sugar cane while also a visit to a milk bar is included. Interesting part of the tour is visit to fruit and vegetables market and charcoal market. Choice of morning and afternoon tour.
