Well worth a visit but if you get a shared taxi make sure you ask where they are going, they might leave you at Kebemer and you need to get another taxi for the last 20/25 minutes of the journey. This should cost 600-700CFA (not 6000 which they might ask for!) If you book a private taxi it will cost about 50,000CFA each way (but they might pick up other people anyway)

The Lompoul Desert offers bewitching panoramas during quad excursions, with majestic dunes sculpted by the wind, trails winding through lush forests and stretches of white and red sand. The shores of the Atlantic Ocean, once crossed by Paris-Dakar vehicles, offer a mystical atmosphere accentuated by the mist. The surrounding Fulani villages are havens of tradition and conviviality, where time seems to stand still.

I am really glad I went there! It is a small desert but you can enjoy the stars at night, sleeping in haimas, rolling in the dunes and riding dromedaries.

My tips:
* I think is better to travel with someone, I was alone and although it was really nice, the trip and all was a bit overwhelming.
* My French is ok, not advanced, but it helped.
* I almost couldn't find information on how to get there, finally it was like this:
-From my hotel to the Gare located in Pikini, I took a taxi and payed about 7.000 CFA. It was quite far (I was close to the Soumbediane market).
- Dakar-Kébemer: I took a sept-place. Each seat costs 3.500 CFA, you can buy all of them for 24.500 CFA or just two more seats so you have space for your bags and all next to you. The sept place only leaves after it's full. The price is marked in signs in the Gare, so prices are fixed. It was almost a 4 hours trip, the road was good but there were some road blocks due to some works. They asked me to pay an extra 1.500 CFA for a toll that was supposed to make it faster. The car was REALLY old and seemed in bad condition but the driver was good and we had no problems, most sept place are old but they are the best option, so everyone told me.
- Kébemer-Lompoul Village: I took a taxi for 6.000 CFA
- Lompoul Village-Camp du Désert (where I stayed): The taxi took me to the parking place where a very nice man called the Camp and they sent a 4x4 car. They didn't charge me for it.
* Take repellent!
* I went in October, it was HOT. At night I had to use a damp sheet to keep me cool but it was fine, totally manageable. They told me January is cooler.
* Dawn was BEAUTIFUL, the light was wonderful for pictures.
* Stars at night were amazing

If you stuck in Senegal (I can't believe anyone actually willingly come to Senegal - visit Kenya or any Southern African countries instead in real Africa!) you will have to find the way to kill time. Sweaty, full of bugs and dust environment makes you want to seat in your room and not to go out at all. But if you decide to get out, options are very limited. One of the places you can visit is a Lompoul Desert. About 150km from Dakar will take you good 4 hours to reach the place with no way to pass a track moving 10km per hour for miles. Once you arrive to the nearby village, you need to ask someone to get a transportation from few desert camps (3km away) as your car probably won't be able to go through the sandy road. My advice - arrive in the evening at around 4pm, when the heat is gone and you will be able breath. Accommodation is very basic, tents with flies and mosquitoes so don't forget your repellent and appropriate clothes. Activities in the desert include camel ride and walking in the desert on your own, nothing else. Be advised that dinner doesn't start before 9 and you have to eat what they give you. The desert itself is quite small with few small dunes. Kids would enjoy climbing dunes and roll-over down. I only give 3 stars and not 1 as it is probably the best place in Senegal to visit :(

We went to Lompoul Desert for one night from Dakar. I think it was worth it. More than one night might have been pointless unless you are with a fun group. We stayed at the Eco Lodge. The weather was perfect! Warm enough during the day and cooler at night. All we needed was one blanket and were comfortable all night. We took a camel ride and enjoyed a drumming presentation before dinner. Our main guide took care of booking everything (transportation, meals, accommodations) and the food was pretty good. The desert, while small, is a beautiful sight! The accommodations at EcoLodge were surprisingly quite nice.

Have you ever wanted to see sand dunes and have a night out in the dessert-like experience but can't go all the way to the Sahara? Well, this is a great chance to experience it. The Ecolodge camp has very cool tents, free boards for sand-surfing, a live drum band playing at night. I also recommend you take the 15 minute camel ride offered throughout the day; it's only 2500 CFA (about $5).

Spent one night here--grandparents, parents, 2 children age 4 and 7. Everyone loved it. Children never stopped running on the dunes--except to ride a camel with their parents and to eat --food was good. Tents are well maintained, comfortable. Fun music after dinner.

A nice site to get out of Dakar. It is about a 3 hour drive with plenty of small villages to see on the way. The dessert is a mix of sand and some shrubbery. There are camel rides offered. The air is fresh and it’s a pleasant visit.
Lompoul itself is a small village with a nice market. It is worth a visit on the way or as you leave.

The amenities were unexpectedly good. A flushing toilet in the open air desert. The tents are built to include privacy and the meals are reflective of the region, tasteful and entertainment by the fireside out of this world. Enjoyed my stay and loved watching the stars at night. Took the opportunity to have a camel ride as well. Highly recommend

Hard to believe this is located where it is. Worth the trip to experience a mini desert so close to the Ocean Atlantique.
