- Ali3 contributionsCurry nightUnbelievable hospitality, very clean room, spotless, dry bathroom. Breakfast was 5 minutes before time. The beautiful sounds of the birds, woke me up,as if they were sent to 😊. I love it there and a place to reconnect with nature. Bala's Curry was something out of this world,! I told a friend, he should be a chef and not a conservationist.😊 Awesome receptionist. See you soon Tacugama.Visited December 2022Travelled with friendsWritten December 10, 2022

You get a great overview of the amazing work they do as well as learn about the chimps themselves. There's a nice gift shop and cafe too to have a look around. Definitely one of top tourist attractions in Sierra Leone.Visited December 2022Written February 6, 2023
- Sam B2 contributionsOvernight Stay at TacugamaTacugama is a wonderful place to stay. The reception team are very friendly and make organising the stay very easy. The tour guides and rangers are very knowledgeable of the chimpanzees and the surrounding area. The lodge was extremely clean and spacious. Dinner and breakfast was tasty and good portion sizes. Would recommend this place to anyone visiting Sierra Leone! Thank you Tacugama team.Visited February 2023Written February 27, 2023

Educational, knowledgeable and caring staff, beautiful accommodations, delicious food, interesting fellow guests. I intend to finish my future visits to Sweet Salone with a stay at Tacugama.Visited February 2023Written March 6, 2023
- Eve B2 contributionsChimpanzee rescueHad a fabulous time seeing the chimpanzees and the people who keep them safe and healthy. Beautiful forested area. Stand overnight and enjoyed hanging out in the hammock with the forest sounds. Great vegetarian dinner (I a vegan) and we even had a bottle of wine with it.Visited March 2023Written March 19, 2023
- Unisa KLondon, United Kingdom1 contributionAwesome experienceThe whole family of 9 enjoyed seeing the creatures live especially my children from England. It was an awesome experience. There are few things you must be weary of, firstly the road is very bad and dangerous only jeeps would be able to go through. Secondly, You would be ask to pay more if you are not a Sierra Leonean which I think is not fair and discriminatory. The people running that facility should maintain the road leading to the Sanctuary to avoid accidents and make it accessible.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten March 20, 2023
- Michelle E2 contributionsPeaceful Primates and a Lovely LodgeI highly recommend the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary to any traveller passing through Freetown. It is very easy to get to by (4WD) hired car, and the atmosphere is just enchanting. You really feel as though you are staying in the trees and you hear the chimps calling to each other as you drift off to sleep after a delicious meal. The rangers are very committed to their charges and have a great deal of knowledge they are pleased to share. A topnotch experience!Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten August 15, 2023
- Michelle CLagos, Portugal15 contributionsAmazing Work At TacugamaA stunning location and an opportunity to learn about how the sanctuary is saving chimpanzees and trying to educate people about the negatives of deforestation. Benjamin was a great tour guide within the sanctuary and ranger Clifford took us on an amazingly informative forest hike. We even heard wild chimps in the forest! We stayed in an Eco lodge over night - truly at one with nature - and it was amazing to hear the sanctuary chimps during the night screeching and hooting. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Freetown.Visited March 2023Written August 21, 2023

I’m glad I visited here on my last afternoon in Salone. It was great learning more about the sanctuary’s work saving chimpanzees. My guide Emmanuel was a great person to talk to and learn more about chimps but also SL in general. There’s a 70-foot observation tower just outside the main gate that the took me up on.
At the same time, shocking to see first hand the rampant deforestation all around the park and the relentless illegal encroachment of “fancy” villas being cut into the hills. The sanctuary will be a forested island in the middle of the city soon if better urban planning (i.e. preventing the illegal land grabbing) isn’t taking place.

Knowledgeable and passionate tour guides made this visit very special. You can see they really care about this place and they provide lots of little know facts about the western chimpanzees as well as information about the importance of conservation of their natural habitat (not only for the chimpanzees but for the nation as a whole).
