I visited the monument as part of a walking tour of the city of Kampala. It is a symbolic monument and a reminder of the struggle that brought independence from colonial rule. There is not much to do at the site, just getting a brief background about the monument, taking pictures and relaxing for some minutes. The monument is located in the quieter part of the city, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kampala.

Replacing George V of Britain, since 1962 the independence monument in a corner southwest of the Sheraton hotel shows a woman holding a naked boy high up. The woman stands firm. There are what looks like ropes around the lower parts of her legs, perhaps symbolizing struggle to get rid of colonial ties.

If you are passing, it's worth crossing the road to take a look. The monument is now backed by a wall painted in the national colours, which separates it from the gardens behind. These gardens, once known as Jubilee Gardens, were gifted to the city of Kampala by an Indian businessman, but now form part of the grounds of the Sheraton Hotel. Opposite, on the traffic island, is a statue of Kabaka Edward Muteesa II.

The independence monument in Kampala next to Sheraton hotel reminds me of Uganda's history since 1962. It's a beautiful lace to visit while in Kampala and take nice photos

The Independence Monument is a symbol of Ugandan history and cultural heritage. It is a big towering concrete structure in Independence Squire behind the wall of Sheraton Hotel on the junction of Speke Road and Nile Avenue in Central Business District of Kampala. It is an interesting work of art that shows a woman standing firmly on the ground with her legs slightly parted while hoisting a baby in the air. Independence Monument was constructed by former British Colonial Government and unveiled by the then Prime Minister Sir Apolo Milton Obote on 5th October, just 4 days before Uganda’s independence on 9th October 1962. The Monument was part of celebrations to mark the independence and signify a new born country let free from the bonds of colonization. It was built by Gregory Magoba, one of Uganda’s first professional sculptors.

Overall nice monument located near the Ugandan parliament. It’s not the biggest or best monument but worth seeing when visiting Kampala for the history of Uganda and the brutal colonization they had to endure before full independence.

Kampala and Uganda have experienced some turbulent history and we felt that visiting this monument was important so made sure that we included it in our walking tour around the city.
However, when we got there, we were a little disappointed.
The statue looks forgotten and somewhat unkept.

Kampala traffic on weekdays, makes it hard to park and visit this monument. But, we saw it from the streets and it was a homage to Ugandan Independence. It is rather small but impressive. Located in the best part of Kampala.

Nice monument - free to walk up to and around. Easily accessible in the city centre - enjoyed the explanation of the statue as it is a child rising up from a mother representing the new youth rising up from the old Africa.

This monument is located in the city center of Kampala which symbolism a new child that has been born in Africa who is Uganda. It brings independence memories to Ugandans of today and generations to come. A better place to visit.
