Bhutan has collection of some amazing stamps - scented stamps, talking stamps, musical stamps as well as stamps of many international event. The personalized stamps are interesting - you can take a picture and make a stamp and use it for a postcard.

For inr500 you can get yourself printed on Bhutan official stamp. We were told we use it as a real postage. Did not try that yet

Many people don't know that this place exists. You have to reach the General Post Office complex at Thimphu. There is a separate door on the right that is the entrabce to the museum. The place is quite informative. Bhutan was the first country to release 3D stamps! When man landed on the moon! And they even have steel and gold foil stamps. How the Bhutanese have pioneered in this field while most of their country didnt even have roads is food for thought. They have a facility where you can give you photo(soft copy would do) and they make a stamp sheet with your photo on it for Nu 500. Suggest that you can click your photos in traditional Go/Kira someplace and then use this photo for your stamp sheet. If you got kids, please take them.

We visited the postal office the first day after we landed in Paro as it was one the way to our hotel that night. Saw various introductions and most interesting of all, made a few sheets of our own stamps, and using these real stamps with our own photos on them, posted a few post cards.

As we posted photos of our own stamps in social media, we received floods of requests to get relatives similar stamps using their own photos! They said these would be the best souvenirs of all. We agreed too because they were so light to carry.

We eve made a detour in our returning itinerary at the end of our 7-day trip to go back to the post office.

TIPS: airdrop selected photos with the office people there, or bring your card with the selected photos on it.

Tips: color photos without any specific Art pieces. We tried a favorite photo with a mock magazine frame to be funny but were told the magazine cover was not allowed, even it was for fun.

Opening days: make sure you plan ahead so you don't find them closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Vicinity: it is close to a lot of other sightseeing places in Thimphu so you can easily fit into your itinerary. We visited the Living Museum afterwards, which was only 5-10 min away.

This small postal museum is totally worth a visit. It has some quality displays that show this history of postal services in Bhutan and more importantly how they used stamps as one of the first and best ways to generate foreign currency. It kick started their international economy. Be sure to get the story. They keep this "leading edge" revenue generation going by letting you take a picture and instantly printing up stamps for you to use on postcards.
This was not on our original itinerary, but Simon Winchester the writer, and part of our group, recommend a visit. It was a highlight of our 10 days in Bhutan.

The postal museum is located next to the national post office and is well worth a visit to learn about the philatelic history of Bhutan. While there, you can arrange to have your picture taken and affixed to an official stamp of this country which can then be used to mail postcards and letters back home to friends, neighbors and relatives.
