Changangkha Lhakhang is an old fortress like temple and monastic school perched on a ridge above Thimphu, south-east of Motithang. It was established in the 12th century on a site chosen by Lama Phajo Drukgom Shigpo, who came from Ralung in Tibet. The central statue is Chenrezig in a 11-headed manifestations, and the books in the temple are larger in size than usual Tibetan texts. There is an excellent view of Thimphu from the courtyard.

Changangkha Lhakhang temple is very popular among local Bhutanese. It is situated on a ridge above Thimphu, south east of Motithang. We have to thank our guide for taking us there though it was not in our itinerary. It has well laid out steps and climbing was not difficult.

This was established around 12th century, by Lama Phajo Drukgom Shigpo. Parents come with their new born children to seek blessings from the protector deity Tamdrin which is in the inner sanctum and only Bhutanese are allowed to go in.

The main Deity is Tara/ Chenrizig/ Avalokiteswara who has 11 headed thousand arms. It is wonderful to such a manifestation!

There is also astrologer in this place where by people can consult him. The Kora around the temple gives a beautiful view of the place. Right now renovations are going on.

Changangkha Monastery is one of my favorite monastery in Thimphu, I love this place so much and wish i could spend more time here. The location is awesome, you can see 360 degree of whole Thimphu valley including the Buddha Dordenma on the hill which is right hand side of the monastery. The main Statue is the Chenrizig - Compassion Buddha. You need to remove your shoes out of main door to the temple and once inside the chapel, tourists are not allowed to enter into the main shrine room. You can sit down, meditate and pray, such a overwhelming feeling, truly powerful.

This lhakhang temple monastery is central and easily walked to from central Thimphu. There are all the usual elements, but somehow tourists seem to miss it so it felt more real with just me and the local folk attending to their devotions. A wonderful atmosphere.

This popular fortress like temple is perched on a ridge above central Thimpu was established in the 12th century. There is a long uphill climb to reach the temple with prayer wheels all along the walls. Our guide told us that parents come here to name their children and seek the blessings from the protector deity Tamdrin. We saw few local ladies with babies on their back prostrating before the deity. Children named at this temple visit every year to offer thanksgiving.

Changangkha Lhakhang is the oldest temple in Thimphu. It is famous as 'name giving temple' as new-borns are brought here by their parents and the resident astrologers give an appropriate name to the child based on its date of birth, time of birth and astrology. The temple sanctum sanctorum has a beautiful 11-headed statue of Lord Avalokiteswara. Photography is not allowed inside the temple; also wear appropriate attire. The temple is located on a small hillock, about 50 steps above ground and provides a beautiful view of Thimphu town. Best visited along with a tour guide who can offer you more perspective into the history, culture and the ancient stories.

This was our second spot during Thimpu sightseeing. The temple can be reached after climbing a few steep steps. As told by our guide new born babies are brought to this temple for ceremonies. We did find two couple with cute babies praying in the temple. The view of Thimpu town from the temple is breath taking. Do visit this place if you are in Thimpu as other than holy importance it also provides an opportunity to communicate with the locals and click some beautiful pictures of birds eye view of the city.

Would not add this place in the must see places in Thimphu ..having said that for those who do have time at their hand can surely visit this temple which is on a hillock ..a 5 minute upward climb ..it is believed as a place of blessing for new babies and thus you will see many a Bhutanese new parents getting their babies ...some say so strong is the belief that in case of illness people get their babies here before taking them to hospitals ...a peaceful place with a beautiful long prayer wheel wall ..spend some time on the benches which oversee the Thimphu valley ..can be a short and sweet visit
