Very, very busy area. Liked watching the ritual and prayer by so many people just as they are passing by. All sorts of people, visitors and local. Saw the most of monks that we had seen around Nepal. Also a good shopping area amongst all the activity.

This is the largest Buddhist temple in Nepal. It is well worth a visit, although I would not rate it as the top attraction in Kathmandu. The entrance fee is 250 NPR. It is quite crowded and there are lots of cafes and shops surrounding the base of the Stupa, somewhat detracting from its magnificence,

I did not get to see the Stupa completed on my last trip - just 8 months after the earthquake, so this was an emotional moment to see this completed and feel that finally some movement was being seen in getting the cultural monuments restored to their glory. It was Holi festival and I enjoyed the cacphony of noise and... More

The place is truly amazing. If possible try to aim for early morning - less tourists / more local people. Stupa is fully restored post earthquake. Plan to spend at least 1.5-2 hours and take in the atmosphere. Entrance fee for foreigners is 250 npr. Taxi from Thamel 350-400 (if someone wants more than that - talk to another driver).... More

Great historical experience, but far too commercialized and surrounded by shops to feel like a truly holy site. Watch out for "guides" who are not necessary and just trying to make a few rupees.
