An antique and historical street. Ask for the best masala tea which is being a lane where beads are sold. The best I have tasted and extremely cheap . Take your time to look for the old homes and temples hidden behind the wares .

We wondered around the streets of Thamel abd walked right into this shopping area. There are so many shops all around, from textile, to pottery, to other types of souvenirs.

Plenty of shops, some temples, and a lot of crowd - that characterizes the place, which good for shopping because the prices are meant for locals, not essentially for visitors, so are more realistic.

One can find Nepali culture well carved in windows of buildings, not only in the temples but also in private houses. It is a point of attraction not only for tourists but also that it is a centre of market of traditional ornaments, apparels. If you are buying something, be careful to select the genuine items from artificial ones and do not forget to bargain.

Indrachowk is in the heart of old Kathmandu city and just 5 minutes walk from Kathmandu Durbar Square.
It is the commercial hub of the old city and the local market is colorful, crowded and vibrant.
It sells all possible things but it is just interesting to walk through it to enjoy the experience.
Indrachowk area has temples and traditional stores that are unique. If you enjoy walking through a market then you'll love it.
It also has a unique "Pote" bazaar.Pote are beads worn by married hindu women and made by muslims. Not too far is Machindra bahal temple, worshipped by Hindus and Buddhists.Further on is the Annapurna temple and Ason chowk. One can continue walking through Tyoda and Thahiti and reach Thamel. The whole walk can be done in an hour but it is recommended that you stop, explore and enjoy the walk.
If you want a completely different atmosphere and a more local ambience then visit the area in the early morning when the vendors are selling vegetables and fruits.

Fun to see all the wares set up for sale in this big open market space. Don't forget to bargain as you enjoy the Nepalese tourist lures.

We stumbled upon Indra Chowk by chance, while strolling back from the Durbar Square to our hotel in Thamel. All of a sudden there was this crowded junction full of shops selling colourful Nepali potey bead necklaces - that was Indra Chowk!
Needless to say, this is a good place to buy colourful Nepali bead chains in brilliant colours, red and green being the most popular. At a reasonable local price unlike the tourist areas of Thamel and Durbar Square.
Apart from the shops selling beads and jewellery, there is a temple at the junction and the roads leading out from here are effectively the local bazaar, terribly congested with people and motor cycles and cycle rickshaws and shops selling everything from kitchen utensils to local style clothes and shoes and textiles and just about whatever else you can think of. Bhut Jolokia chillies and vegetables too. All in narrow lanes criss crossed with tangled cable wire and dilapidated old buildings, some with exquisite carved wood facades. Plenty of Khaja Ghar eateries, guest houses, small restaurants etc. etc.
I loved it, this place has so much more ambiance than touristy Thamel . Its a good way to pass a few hours if you want to get a local feel, even if you do not buy anything.
It really gets extraordinarily crowded here. Indians and those from countries with similarly crowded bazars can handle it. No one pushes or jostles you but obviously it helps to be alert for pick pockets. Visitors who are not used to negotiating their way through crowded areas, or the "mall types" may not enjoy the experience.

Indra Chowk is the oldest market town in the centre of Kathmandu. You can enter Indra chowk from New road and it is the walking street having shops in the both sides. you can buy whatever you want in that market, from groceries to clothes, utensils, shoes etc.
