Neighbourhood: Thonburi
Thonburi, a quaint neighborhood in Bangkok, presents an intriguing contrast to its bustling sister, the capital city. Dominated by the iconic Wat Arun, a temple with intricate design that lights up at sunset, it is a haven for those seeking a less beaten path. The neighborhood is a labyrinth of canals, offering an alternative mode of transportation via long-tail boat and opening opportunities for quiet exploration. A smattering of local markets, like Wang Lang Market, offer a plethora of authentic Thai street food and unique shopping experiences. The charm of Thonburi lies in its unhurried pace, offering a glimpse into the local way of life, a world away from the typical tourist trail.

I bought a cooking class at Amita Thai Cooking School as a surprise gift for my husband’s birthday. I was really happy with the day, which as most people have said starts with a spot-on-time hotel pickup, an interesting trip up the river and into a side klong, then to Tam’s atmospheric house on the khlong.

I consider my husband and I to be very well informed about Asian food – we have lived and worked in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia and we tend to hang with the locals, not living an ‘expat’ life so we encounter a lot of local food. Nevertheless, we learned quite a few things about the herbs and plants in Tam’s garden and although we already cooked most of the dishes included in the class at home, spending time listening to Tam was like being in the home of a local friend and picking up tips on their way of doing things. There were only four people in total the day we were there so it was really easy to engage Tam in conversation and ask questions that were specifically of interest to us. We learned a lot, enjoyed the atmosphere and cooked some aroi food.

I will attach some photos, as I like to take pics. It was not a cheap day, but I felt the money was well spent, unlike many mass, herd-‘em-around day tours one could take. We NEVER go on group things so I was nervous about this, but it all worked out perfectly.

I was for two days in Bangkok with a friend and I had asked Orientours to prepare an unusual package since I had already been there many times. Among the various things, they organized this Thai cooking lesson. I really loved it. Of course you have to speak and understand English pretty well, since Tam, the teacher, speaks fluent English. Not easy for the average Italian tourist. We were taken from the hotel to the school by boat, through the canals to the back of the house. The place is very nice, a well tended garden with a pavillion to eat and another one for the lessons and the preparation of the food. I was fascinated by the lesson: Tam is brilliant and also very knowledgeable, it was a real plasure to listen to her explaining. It was the thing I liked most of this latest stay in Bangkok. I would like to do it again in the next future.

Going to Bangkok? Remember the name AMITA THAI COOKING. Located on one of BKK's longs(canals) it is an absolutely delightful way to spend 4-5 hours and come away with a full belly, lots of knowledge about Thai food including recipes, and an incredible Thai experience for a very decent price. You see the herbs you use growing in Tam's garden. Chase after the rooster and his hens. See how to cook, then do it yourself. Be between 1 and 18 class members (most classes are on the smaller side so much more personal attention) and experience what it is like to eat your own cooked food. It all takes place outside on the patio in a beautifully kept area. Listen to the long tail boats passing with tourists unlucky enough NOT to be with you. Tam's English is impeccable so conversation is easy if you speak English. Even converse with the chatty Mynah bird. Tam lives here. She cooks here. Her roots are in this house. It is fun. It is delicious. It is an experience you can take home and gloat over. Even taste again and again. If you miss this in Bangkok, you've missed part of Thailand that you will regret.

I chose this to celebrate my 39th birthday with my husband. Pickup was exactly on time at 10.30am. We were driven with 1 other guest to a boat then travelled to Tam's house on a canal. Unfortunately it was raining but we didn't let this spoil our day.

Upon arrival we were treated to specially cooked snacks and a yummy lemongrass drink. It was very relaxing as Tam told us about how to cook the snacks as we waited for another 2 guests to arrive.

We went for a tour around the garden learning about herbs which we found interesting. We were all given an umbrella so the rain didn't bother us.

Tam then cooked each dish and explained how to cook it all the while. After we were each led to our own cooking stations and we all cooked the dishes. My husband has never really cooked and he found it easy and enjoyable. There is no pressure. There are plenty of family members to help.

The table was set beautifully for lunch and we enjoyed all the food we had cooked. There is definitely plenty of food! We had had breakfast at about 9am. Lunch wasn't cooked until after 2pm but we felt fine as we tasted Tam's cooking along the way. Bathroom facilities excellent.

As it was my birthday, my husband had apparently told them and they all lines up and sang Happy Birthday and presented me with a lovely wooden cooking spoon! I thought that was really sweet.

We arrived back at the hotel around 5pm.

We both thought it was a great way to spend the day...highly recommend!!!!!!!!

We had such a great morning learning how to prepare authentic Thai dishes. Tam is the sweetest woman and cooking in her beautiful kitchen was a treat. Our day started with a longtail boat ride through the canals to her home, followed by touring her gardens, cooking our menu and eating lunch on the patio with a talking bird named Basil and her friendly rooster Soy Sauce!

Tam's cooking class was excellent. It was the singular highlight of my visit to Bangkok. Reaching class by boat, we got to enjoy an interesting view of the city and neighborhood. Tam and her staff were super friendly and helpful, the class was well organized, the instruction was clear, and the facility and setting were first-rate. What fun it was to use authentic, local ingredients, receive expert how-to instruction during the hands-on cooking, and finally enjoy a multicourse meal of delicious food in a beautiful garden setting.

Food coma alert: between sampling each dish at the cooking demonstration and then eating the lunch you have cooked, there is lots of food! Too much! You may want to keep to a small breakfast before coming to class and plan for a modest dinner afterwards.

Really a pleasure! You are picked up from your hotel and taken by boat to Tam's house on the canal. There she walks you through her garden and you learn about the Thai ingredients. She is very knowledgeable and complete. She truly enjoys what she does.

Then she will cook for you, step by step. Explaining everything. Outside in pleasant garden setting. But my mistake was I ate everything she cooked. Because then you repeat the process, with each person cooking at their own station. Then there is a meal together. So I ate twice...

But really a lot of fun. She is very organized.

This is my second visit. This time i picked the same menu as I did last time but I still enjoyed it. The setting is chef tam's family house, we spent about 40 mins on motor boat and getting into the cooking class. The setting is nice semi outdoor, in the backyard / garden. Chef tam explains every herb and ingredient clearly and we all get to do own dishes which made it every enjoyable. Highly recommended

This is one of "those" unique experiences that simply cannot be missed... that you will talk about for years.
We were introduced to Tam's cooking class by friends, who accompanied us for their second experience with Tam. Also in our group of eight budding Thai chefs were two couples from Switzerland who were also introducing their friends to Tam's class.
After being picked at your hotel in the morning, be prepared to spend the better part of six hours for this excursion... it is WELL worth the time!
Tam is a gracious host in her residential surroundings which, in addition to some wonderful Thai cooking, will give one an insight to Thai living.
