Beautiful and serene. Visiting in January there were still quite a few people, mainly Vietnamese. Everybody respectful of each other and of the place. A very pleasant and happy atmosphere, we got chatting with two or three people, including one of the monks. A nice walk down to the road by the lake. You can get a boat ride there if you want to. As it was out of season we wondered if we could get to and from there inexpensively in a Grab car - no difficulty whatsoever (you need to have the Grab app downloaded) and we only had to wait a very few minutes to be picked up.

I was on a tour and arrived at this place. Quite literally had no expectations. This place is so amazing, the building and gardens are incredibly crafted and maintained into a very beautiful serene place. I could hear the Buddhist monks chanting in another building which added to the joy. Lots of Bonsai plants crafted as well.

A beautiful and peaceful place. The garden are stunning and there are many places to sit in contemplation. The monastery hall and pagodas are beautiful.
There is a path through the forest to the lake which is a lovely stroll, and vendors selling cold refreshments to enjoy.

This pagoda, beautifully situated on a mountain, is a newer building and was completed in 1993/94. The Buddhist pagoda is located outside the city of Dalat. Buddhist monks and nuns live here, there are prayer halls, a library and also a stupa, which cannot be visited.
The complex is a small idyll with lots of flowers and trees. This pagoda is also a meeting place for international Buddhists.
We don't really like the new pagodas that much. Despite the many tourists, the Thien Vinh Truc Lam Pagoda exudes a great sense of calm.

Simply beautiful. The temple, the gardens, the setting, the people. Nothing to dislike.
We were not interested in my the cable car across the road, which coincidentally looked closer anyway!
As you arrive there is a sign that asks that you were respectful clothing. No shorts, sleeveless clothes allowed! Fully understand why and people seemed to respect this!
A beautiful stop!

Although this monastery is a bit touristy but we had opportunity to speak with buddhist students. It was a fantastic experience to learn about how they think about meditation, about the way of life based on the karma and how they spend their days in the monastery. They invited us to have lunch with them so we could taste their homemade food and tea. They are so friendly and open-minded. And the buildings surrounded by beautiful trees and flowers are amazing.

So beautiful so serene. Has to be one of the most beautiful monasteries I have ever visited. Beautiful landscaping. Beautiful gardens. This temple is a stone’s throw away from the cable car station. Insta worthy place.

We visited the monastery after taking the cable car from town. There are beautiful gardens and shrines and statuary to see. If you want to enter the temples you must have your shoulders and knees covered, so dress appropriately or bring a wrap (men too).

It's cost 70,000 dong for a return trip on the cable cart. It wasn't overly busy when I went in the morning, however I was surrounded by a few self entitled vietnamese families trying to push in line. That put the entire experience off for me. Not to mention the same vietnamese families walking in front of people trying to take photos of the pagodas. No patience.

I am surprised that this is only rated #4 on things to do. As far as I am concerned if you only had one thing to do this is the best one. Access is easy. You hail any taxi and say "Cable Car". They all know where to take you. It costs 40,000 dong taxi. Then you go up stairs to the cable car. This is 70,000 return. The cable car ride is pleasant and you get a treetops high view of the mountains around Dalat. An option to the return trip is to go one way and taxi back the long way...but this is quite a few kilometres extra. After going to the Buddhist Temples which are modern and clean you walk down to the lake on the other side. This lake is much more scenic and peaceful than the lake in town. If you have a few extra hours here you can get the boat from the lake for a 3 or 4 km trip. It is quite beautiful and interesting views from the boat. As I said you have the option of return by taxi from the lake or by the cable car.

Are meditation courses held at the monastery and if so is it possible to stay there as a guest?
Written September 19, 2018
I'm pretty sure there is a meditation centre there, but not sure if it is for their private use or if they run courses.

Where do you take the cablecar from?
Written June 15, 2018
It's at the very top of Dong Da Street. Also, the cable cars stop between 11.30-1.30 each day for their lunch break. So be prepared to spend a couple of hours there, which is easy to do anyway.

Has anyone tried staying at the monastery for a retreat? I just recently completed a 10 day silent retreat in Thailand at one of the monasteries in the south. I was hoping to do something similar in Vietnam. Please and thank you

I've never done it personally but met several guys who has been through the experience, however, as far as I can remember there is a time-frame commitment at this monastery.
I remember someone saying that you need to commit for at least four weeks and other than that you should be ok to retreat yourself up.... ;-)

Is Thien Vien Truc Lam a full day activity or can it be done in less time?

Is there a cafe or restaurant at the bottom of cable car, or at the top near the pagoda? Also, how long does the cable car ride itself take?
Written August 22, 2016
It takes about 7-10 minutes one way and the same back :)
It is important to mention that we have been there in May, so it wasn't the high season and we didn't have to wait in the queue.
You can buy some souvenirs and snacks from the street (corns, meet, bread) close the the pagoda but it was the ugliest food I have seen, so I am not sure about the quality. Just bring something with you :)
