The Long Bien bridge across the Red River connects Hanoi with the main port of Haiphong. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the bridge sustained significant damage during the Vietnam War. Only half of the bridge retains its original shape, but a rebuilding project supported by the French government is currently in progress to restore the bridge to its original appearance.

Great views of the river and part of the city. The railing is a bit sketchy and there is a constant throng of scooters passing you. Bit of fun

Our hotel owner Tony of Gia Thanh took me to an Optometrist across the river to get new spectacles after my originals were faulty. Best pair of spectacles ever....

Acces to the bridge is not easy as you have to cross the traffic entry to the bridge. Walking along has to be careful as the walkway is narrow and mtos are passing by in a continuous flux! The river was not very large, but it gives you a different viewpoint on the city

Designed by Eiffel and quite a monument to time. Has withstood numerous floods and bombings during the Vietnam War. Repaired time after time.

Great view and architecture. You can look at the life of farmers who live and farm under the bridge.

Nice walk, extremely busy with traffic. Locals were fishing below in the river, not sure I would eat anything from there!

Always an experience to ride it with the locals at 'rush hour' on the two motor bike routes on either side of the rail line. Looks as if it is being repaired/restored but it is taking a long time.

This is the oldest bridge across the Red River. Only motorbikes and pedestrians are allowed. If you have time, you can take a walk as you can see the local wet market below the bridge, then those houses where poor people stays and they do farms and pigs & chickens etc. The only problem is that the way for pedestrian... Just has to be seen so long so old and Eifel had his hands in it. Typical of Vietnam maybe not really looked after in need of some Paint etc.

I wouldn't be rushing back to see it. It is impressive with European influence . It is used by motorcycles now as there is a newer one close by.
