It is ok to visit and shop some beautiful lacquer to finish a long day tour! Traditional craft villages of Ha Thai lacquer lies the old highway 1A, near the Quan Ganh bridge, turn left on inter-communal Duyen Thai, pass viaduct then come to village, not far from the center of Hanoi. You could visit for fun or get more knowledges about the technology described by a lacquer of the following main stages: bundle of cuttings build, decorate, grinding and polishing.

This village is not in travellers guides and our hotel travel agent did not know the place.... So we booked a car for half day to get there hoping to see lacquerware production in all its stages and find beautiful pieces of art. It took a while for the driver to find the village and it was obvious that they never saw tourists there. It only presents an interest if you want to write a paper on how a village can make a business of this, each family being specialised in their contribution to the final product.

Can anyone tell me if buying lacquer ware is cheaper from Ha Thai or the touristy Hanoi production type showroom? Can't decide if the prices are too high here in Hanoi. Is it worth a trip to the village to buy direct? I find it really helpful when people can give ideas on price but neither reviewer has. Has anyone bought anything recently and for how much?
