Imposing Flag Tower before the Citadel
The Flag Tower is pretty high and you can see it from a distance, from many parts of Hue. It stands on a small fortress just before the Citadel's Noon Gate (main entrance). Excellent photo op, specially with some locals around.

    A symbolic site
The Flag Tower is a unique structure. As far as tourists are concerned it is nothing more than a photo opportunity, as you cannot go inside. To the locals it means probably much more. It was built at the start of the 19th century and has withstood time and become a symbol. It has always flown the flag of the rulers. Today the Vietnamese flag flies at the top of a very long pole and it is the centre of many significant and symbolic ceremonies.

The flag tower stands in front of the citadel. You can see it from the distance. The flag flutters so proudly and imposingly, this is one of the symbols of Hue.

There is an iconic war photo taken by AP during the Tet Offensive in 1968 of a tower with a South Vietnam flag on top of a tower at the end of the little bridge across the moat. Many people died here defending the Citadel. The flag tower is located just beside this little tower that has been refurbished today. The flag tower is a great defensive system that reminded me of Edinburgh Castle.

Fortress with Vietnamese national flag recognizable from long distance. Object is unfortunately inaccessible for visit. There are several big cannons outside.

An old flagpole stands between heaven and earth, bringing a very ancient beauty. I love it,but can't move up near the flagpole to check-in

This flag tower has been renovated several times since it was first constructed and can be seen from a distance. The tower and flagpole is about 55 m high where the Vietnamese flag proudly flutters in the breeze

Right in front of the "Imperial Citadel", a huge Vietnam's flag flies over Huê and its "Perfume River"! This is "The Flag Tower", a witness of Vietnam's recent history. The tower was originally built in 1807 and remodeled on several occasions as 1829, 1831, 1840, 1846, 1904, 1948 and 1995. It consists of three flat-top pyramids, each placed on the top of the other, in descending order. At the top pyramid, a 37m high steel-core flagpole was placed, bringing the total height of "The Flag Tower" to incredible 54,5 m! Along the years, all Vietnam's flags were raised here, from the Imperial one up to today's flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam! Unmissable! Enjoy!

I’d seen this before, but this afternoon is was largely deserted except for a young girl flying a kite. But there is something great about the history and seeing the huge Vietnam flag flying proudly.
