The best theatre in the city. We watched 2 times the same play but enjoyed it again even more. "Arshin mal alan" is about a very simple love story but our great honored writer and composer Uzeyir Hadjibeyov wrote it in an interesting way. Foreigners might not understand whole play however I saw they really were enjoying their time.
I should note it's kinda local secret here, not everyone knows about it but you should.

A definite MUST STOP while in Baku. Magical experience regardless of language. The puppets are totally lifelike and you are transported into another dimension. A very memorable experience. Tickets are a little hard to purchase because the theatre was not open during the day. You can go to ticket kiosks in the city or come prior to show which is what we did. WONDERFUL!!!

The theater is located in a renovated building of the nineteenth century in a narrow street inside the old town. There are two plays at the moment: "Leyli and Majnun" and "Arshin mal alan". The Mugham opera is in Azeri language but even if you don't know the language, you would still enjoy the performance as the story is not complicated at all. It is exactly similar to Romeo and Juliet. These two lovers love each other from childhood. Mejnun (which literally means insane) becomes insane from his love for Leyli. Father of the girl refuses to let an insane boy marry his daughter. He even refuses the order of the king to let this marriage happen. Finally both lovers desperately die in the desert of the endless love toward each other. I would definitely suggest this show. You can also read the story in advance. The performance is on only once a weak. The seats are extremely limited. The theater has only 6 rows!! This performance was the best highlight of my travel to Baku. Kids less than 13 years old are supposedly not allowed based on their site. But we went there with my 10 year old daughter and it was ok. There were even much younger kids.

You must see Leyli and Majnun! Or anything else they might have showing at the time of your visit, because from what I’ve seen I know it is going to be Quality!
Highest praise to Baku Marionette Theatre, starting from the building itself. Impeccable fusion of the old and the modern. The art director, the artists and the staff are in love with what they do and it shows.
I went to see Leyli and Majnun twice in one month and cried both times. The connection between the marionette and the artist is moving beyond words.
In short, a visit to Baku Marionette theatre gives you a taste of culture, history and art in most professional manner.

This theater is located in a narrow alley, called M Magomayev Street, in the Old City of Baku. Azerbaijani Operas written by the father of eastern opera Uzeyir Hajibeyli are performed here. Marionette puppets are used for these performances. Eastern operas like "Arshin mal alan” (cloth peddler) and "Leyli and Majnun” are performed here. Seeing these complex acts is truly a treat for the eyes and ears.
