The main palace has many rooms, but each room is small and only has 2 or 3 artifacts describing the culture. Despite the claims that Baku used to be culturally important, the art pieces displayed are rather lacklustre. At the side, a building with a debated purpose stands, with no information provided whatsoever, one is just there to admire the architecture.

It's very unusual to see in a big city like Baku a beautiful historical palace of Shirvanshahs empire.Architecture and the rooms inside, ruins of royal hamam, mausoleum make you imagine that old times and how people had lived during the empire. Entrance fee is 10manat.

You are in "Icherisheher", the inner walled city of Baku, and just about to enter the old palace of the kings of Shirvan ... In the 15th century, right after a devastating earthquake, Shah Ibrahim I of Shirvan transferred his capital from Shemakha to Baku, where he built his new palace! And this is exactly the "Palace of the Shirvanshahs", which was appointed by Unesco, in 2000, as a "World Heritage Site", when it was described as one of the pearls of Azerbaijan's traditional architecture. The actual complex comprises the palace itself, a mosque with a single minaret, remnants of the royal bath houses, the throne hall, exhibitions rooms, burial vaults and mausoleums - all surrounded by restored sandstone walls and domes. A real journey into the 15th century! Enjoy!

he Palace of the Shirvanshahs is a 15th-century palace built by the Shirvanshahs and described by UNESCO as "one of the pearls of Azerbaijan's architecture". The complex contains the main building of the palace, Divanhane, the burial-vaults, the Shah's mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi's mausoleum also "mausoleum of the dervish" associated with Dervish dancing and mystical Sufism located south of the palace, a portal in the east, Murad's gate, a reservoir and the remains of a bathouse. In 1964, the palace complex was declared a museum-preserve and taken under the protection of the state. In 2000, this ensemble, along with the fortified walls of the historic part of the city and the Maiden Tower, was named a World Heritage Site.

Very well managed and maintained place. Gives a clear overview of the olden era and the values of the Azeri culture.

Every room had representative to clear your doubts apart from guides you can hire from outside for additional charges.

School children have different entry fees compared to adults even though its nominal.

They also have souvenir shops inside the palace.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage List Site, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs is a complex well worth visiting. Apart from the palace itself, it has a number of other parts such as mausoleum, mosque, shrine, baths, etc. The museum side has good displays and I particularly liked the scale model of the Old Town.

I did not actually enter the palace itself, as it was closed at the time of my visit. However there is a fantastic viewpoint just next to the palace. From this spot, you can see four different eras of architecture in Azerbaijan's history. See if you can spot the Safavid/Persian, Imperial Russian, Soviet/Brutalist, and Modern Azerbaijan buildings in my accompanying photos!

Shirvanshah Palace seems to be somewhat overshadowed by Maiden Tower. The second is symbol of Baku and the most visited site in the city, while Palace is relatively in shadows and even skipped entirely by some of the tourists. Wonder why... Baku claims to have long, ancient history. And Shirvanshah Palace is the place where you can actually witness and feel claimed age to the fullest. By far the most atmospheric and authentic place in the city.

Built in traditional Islamic style, palace is actually a complex of several buildings: main palace, Divankhana (court room), mosque, mausoleum of shah's family, royal hamam, tomb of Seyid Yahya Bakuvi (medieval mystic and philosopher). Ironically, palace is the least exciting part of the complex. I found Divankhana and other mentioned places much more rewarding to explore. Architecture is very inspiring. Particularly of main gates of Divankhana - stone carvings, stalactite forms are beauty beyond any words.

In fact, Shrivanshah palace is exact mirror opposite of Topkapi in Turkey. This palace didn't preserve any ornament or decor. However, architecture, to my mind, is surprisingly complex and curious. Topkapi, in contrast, is lavishly adorned however its exterior looks, to my mind, are rather plane.

Historical sights in entire Azerbaijan don't get grander and more authentic than Shirvanshah palace. So, I personally don't see how you can skip this place no matter whether you are into medieval Islamic architecture or not. Some also complain on price.... $9 per person. To my mind the price is quite reasonable especially by standards of Europe where majority of palaces/sights go $20 and higher.
