Chawkbazar Shahi Mosque is located in the Chowk Bazaar area of the old town of Dhaka, south of the current city centre. The mosque is built above a raised platform. The three domed mosque above the platform, now transformed into a multi-storied structure was originally a copy of Shaista Khan’s another three domed mosque at the Mitford Hospital compound near the Buriganga River.

Built in the 1600’s this is one of the oldest mosques in the Indian subcontinent and in Bangladesh. It is incredibly picturesque outside and very clean inside. During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, it is usually very crowded. However, during Ramadan, the outside road is much more famous than the mosque due to the multitude of Iftar shops that are setup and line the street. Crowds of people shop for Iftar items at bargain prices and the whole street becomes closed to traffic!

Being born in the Chawk Bazaar area of old Dhaka, this historic mosque used to be our mosque. Growing up, I prayed many Jumma, Shab-e-barat and Eid prayers in this mosque along with my father and brothers. This is one of the oldest mosques in Dhaka. The mosque was originally built by Subahdar Shayesta Khan in 1676. Chawk Bazaar Shahi mosque has a very tall minaret which used to be the tallest structure in Dhaka. The minaret could be seen from any place in Dhaka. The interior and the exterior of this beautiful mosque is adorned with marvelous mosaic made with broken glasses. The mosque is very big and has three floors.

Chawkbazar Shahi Mosque is located at the Chowk Bazaar area in the old part of the Dhaka city. The three domed mosque above the platform is now a multi-storied building. As per history of this historic mosque, it was built in 17th Century during the rule of Subedar of Bengal, Shaista Khan. Its beautiful architectural design represents the very old age Architectures. It’s a very good to visit the mosque for the history lovers but have to face the huge jam-packed area of the old part of the city.

I remember we used to pray in this mosque at night cause it was very close to many mouth watering food options. It is nothing special compared to some of its neighbors but worth a look if you're around.

Chawkbazar Shahi Mosque (also Chawk Mosque) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is located in the Chowk Bazar area of the old town of Dhaka, south of the current city centre. The construction has been dated to 1676, as noted by an inscription in the Persian language over a doorway. The inscription attributes the project to Subahdar Shaista Khan. So far known this is the earliest dated mosque in the History of Muslim Architecture in Bengal built on a high vaulted platform. The mosque complex includes shops, libraries, etc. The three domed mosque above the platform, now transformed into a multi-storied structure. Today the original building design and the charm/ beauty has been lost most of its original form through multiple renovations and extensions.
As the mosque is located at Bazar area, it is constantly getting overcrowded. This especially occurs during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan as you will find here the biggest Ifter Bazar of Dhaka at that time.
