Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Lenin, was the founder of the Russian Communist Party and leader of the Bolshevik Revolution. This statue depicts him holding open his long winter coat and reaching out to the snowcapped mountains outside of Bishkek as he (perhaps?) promises Peace, Land and Bread to the adoring masses. However, since 2003 he lost his perch in the premier Ala Too Square (which was then called "Lenin Square"), so he is no longer facing the snowcapped mountains, but is now facing in the opposite direction as he is tucked behind the State Historical Museum. Ironically, he now reaches out toward the republic government buildings of the only multi-party parliamentary democracy in Central Asia.
I was told that this was the last statue of Lenin still standing in this part of the world, but even on this same trip I was able to see that this was not true, when I saw the Lenin statue in Khujand (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g811256-d13273386-Reviews-Lenin_Statue-Khujand_Sughd_Province.html)
The statue of Lenin was first replaced by a statue of Erkindik (Liberty), represented by a winged female figure resting on a globe holding a tunduk above her head. The tunduk is the circular frame that rests on top of the traditional Kyrgyz yurt (tent).
Perhaps due to the concern of having a female figure in such a prominent spot, this statue was replaced in 2011 with one of Manas, the national folk hero, which is the one that is still standing there today.

As bad of a man as this guy was, the statue is actually well designed. There's definitely a unique flair about it, and so much history...

Moved to the rear of the History Museum. Perhaps symbolic for Kyrgyzstan's parting from the socialist era in its history. Moreover Lenin was Russian and not Kyrgyz like Manas whose statue eventually replaced him on the central square.
The sculpture itself is in social realist style. Note that Lenin does not carry any weapons, but is using words and showing a way forward with his arm. The civil war between Reds and Whites that followed the 1917 October revolution was eventually won by the Red Army. Severe repression of Kyrgyzness started under Stalin (not Lenin). Perhaps the reason why Lenin's statue remained on the central square of Bishkek for such a long time (until 2003).

Significant piece of Kyrgyzstan history due to Soviet occupation for a big part of this country’s existence.
You have to recognize the significance of this leader.
Surrounding park is quite nice as well.

Bishkek's huge Lenin statue remains the only major statue of Lenin left in Central Asia, presiding over the ceremonial heart of the capital city. After gaining independence from the Soviet Union, most of the new Central Asian republics demolished their monuments to Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. The Lenin Monument in Bishkek has a complex history that reflects the changing political landscape of Kyrgyzstan . The statue was originally erected in 1984 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic. Like many Lenin statues across the former Soviet Union, it was a symbol of the communist regime's influence and power.Following the fall of communism in 1991, there was a wave of decommunization and Lenin statues were taken down in many cities. However, the Lenin statue in Bishkek remained in place until 2003, standing prominently in the square that now has the equestrian statue of Manas the Great. The Statue was relocated to its present location behind the Kyrgyz National Museum. Taking a photograph in front of the last Lenin statue outside Russia is a favourite among tourists.

In the street behind the History Museum and the statue of Manat, you will find a few Soviet Era relics : the statue of good ol' Vladimir Lenin and a very depressing grey office block. At least Lenin has not been removed (yet) to an obscure park ; like it or not, but he forms an important part of the history of this country.

Interesting to see Lenin's statue still standing. However, this is not unusual in Kyrgyzstan because I saw another 4-5 smaller statues in parks in different towns in Kyrgyzstan.

This was an interesting stop on a walking tour of the city. When we asked about Lenin, the response was nobody cares about him anymore.

Check out the interesting history of this statue, it was in the main square then they relegated it to behind the history museum. Many ex-Soviet countries have destroyed their Lenin statues and the Kyrgyz dont seem very fond of their former communist past, but they do recognise that for better or worse, it is part of their history. There is an interesting statue of Marx and Engels nearby. Worth checking out for historical interest. .
