Neighbourhood: Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.

The interior of the church is fascinating, it houses mosaics and sacred relics, it's also a quite place there weren't much people there so I had the chance to take as much pictures as I wanted

Fener Rum Patrikhanesi is located in Balat and serves as the official center of orthodox christian belief in Turkey. It is always better if you visit the place on mass days. We managed to catch it on a cold sunday afternoon and it was a really good experience. The only thing that made me a bit sad is the fact that so few people from orthodox community joined the mass as the numbers went down in recent years. The interior is beautiful and the priests are quite easygoing people to talk to. Every local of a foreign should experience this.

It is a central church that an orthodox person should definitely go to.Especially if you go on Sundays, you will see the patriarch.

Fener Rum Patriarchate is a religious treasure island. With its iconostasis, its many icons and paintings it gives you an insight into the history of Greek Orthodox art in Istanbul.
