This enormous palace was the Imperial residence of Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. Although much of the palace is not accessible, the daily tours of the Harem are of great interest to tourists.

this is a place with great heritage, and potential. However it was simply too busy at the time we went - we arrived at 1115am and there were too many people to appreciate the place. Maybe earlier it would have been better... The other bit which disappointed me was the clinical way in which some of the displays had been... More

We visited this palace on a whirlwind 3-day tour on the city and after first going that day to see the (wonderful) Suleyman Mosque and the (dreadful) Grand Bazaar; luckily the visit to the (relatively disappointing) Blue Mosque came after this (far too big) Palace else I should have keeled over during the trip (which I nearly did) – Far... Loads of wonderful history of the Persian empire and some lovely gardens both in and outside of the museums boundaries. A tip to all, make sure you go early as the queues get VERY long later in the day!

If you can see only place in Istanbul, this is it. Make sure to buy a ticket for the Harem as well and take an audio guide. Besides some impressive architecture and great views on Istanbul, you will a lot about the former life in the palace. The palace also hosts some very valuable relicts (such as the sword of... More

We got here before the gate opened at 8:30 and there was already a line. I recommend buying a ticket beforehand at the kiosks outside of the Palace since you will be only adding a line if you wait to get the ticket on the inside. Go to see the Harem, the Treasury, and the religious relics first. I would... More

With a half-day time constraint, we had a private guide. In addition to the fact he was very knowledgeable, it also got us to bypass the ticket line and also get into parts of the palace others could not. The grounds are splendid, the history very interesting and the rooms exquisite. We were among the last to leave before the... More

This palace is one of the important point of visit in the all town of Istanbul, it is possible to understand the way of life of the Sultans and is family, and how the all kingdom can be ruled with or without the Sultan. Really interesting.

It's an absolutely enormous place, plan on spending a long time seeing everything - totally worth it. The lines for the jewels and sultan's wardrobe were long so we didn't wait - but the rest is really neat. The Harem area is incredible, especially the main room where the sultan sat along with his living area. Remember there is a... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
