This is where Jesus ascended into heaven. The church is built on the stone which is supposedly the footprint of Jesus as he ascended. It is a small place, with much historical significance.

We are inside The Church of Ascension of Christ. It was built upon the footprint of Jesus, before his ascension to Heaven. Poimenia, a pious and wealthy Roman lady funded and built a Byzantine church on the site in 384CE. Mount Olives became a Waqf, after the fall of Jerusalem in 1187CE. It was converted into a mosque. Saladin handover it back as a church as goodwill. Arabic inscriptions, qibla, and mihrab are visible inside the church.

We are at the footprint of Jesus. It was embedded in The Rock of Ascension. The Ascension of Christ is another milestone in the New Testament.

A small dome on the Mount of Olives, we had to wait in line for some minutes while other groups went inside. Once inside, it took just a minute or two to see and pray there, so it was a fast visit. It was a little cramped inside, we were a group of 50. Definitely a must-do on a Holy Land tour!

What a fire trap! Lines of pilgrims waiting for a chance to enter this small space(paying 10 shekels to do so) and hover over the footprint of Jesus with candles burning all around and visitors kneeling and throwing crosses and tokens into the footprint, ...
If this is important to you as a pilgrim..go for it, Otherwise it is a firetrap.

I came here for the Ascension Festival on Ascension Day when all the Orthodox served Holy Liturgies simultaneously. A day to remember... From this Rock, Jesus ascended & shall come again here! A must-visit!

I just wish we could adorn the chapel with Byzantine Icons especially of Jesus and His Ascension!

Pretty much across the street is the Lookout Point, a wide angle view overlooking Jerusalem!

We stopped here while on a pilgrimage early in the day. Best time to visit since the crowds were not there yet. From the view of an amateur photographer, this subject is intriguing. Ancient walls and the dark interior of the small church beckon. Since on a tour, my gear was a pocket camera and it worked well. A DSLR would be OK if it has a zoom lens. Lighting varies. Inside it is dark, so adjust ISO. Look around. There are some stones from the earliest church on display which lend themselves to detail shots.

Had a quick visit here which sits in the middle of an octagonal walls of ruined Crusader church. Good thing there were some great souvenir stuffs in the premises here that we were able to buy in such a short time.

The most interesting part was an imprint in the rock that claimed to be the footprints of Jesus as he ascended to heaven. If you are int archeology the hitory of the place is interesting

The Church (Dome) of the Ascension was built in the Byzantine era around 380 AD. The Muslims took control from the Crusaders in 1198 and converted the chapel into a mosque. Today you’ll find a minaret and small, deteriorated and plain rotunda inside a walled enclosure. The Chapel marks the spot where Jesus ascended into Heaven after His resurrection, as described in the Gospels. The Dome contains an imprint of Jesus’ right foot before His Ascension (the left footprint is in the Al-Aqsa Mosque). The Mount of Olives has 3 other sites that commemorate the Ascension. We didn’t get to visit these, but I can tell you this one, as part of a mosque, is disappointing. Still, if you’re on a pilgrimage, you’ll want to stop here for the religious significance to Christians.

the presumed site where Jesus ascended. (the muslims celebrate it in a mosque just next to it). However the site did not do it for me - the two caretakers demand a small fee to enter and or the leaflet and the place is very small. Can be skipped if you don't go for the religious significance.
