The church, from an architectural view is fabulous. It was obviously constructed over many periods and it's early roots can be seen by going down multiple levels before reaching the oldest section, which is well below thw current ground level. It can be difficult to find as the entrance to the square in front of the church is small and... More

I was on an archeological tour and it was interesting to see how the site fits the biblical description of the site. The line was long to see rocky location of the biblical site of Calvary as was the line to the tomb. Definitely worth a visit

2 hr wait to get to the enshrined tomb area; 1 hr line to get to the man-made altar covering Golgotha; literally 1000's people inside !!! I passed on the lines - took a few pics inside just to say I visited !!

Had no idea that the Via Rosa was in small part of old town - excellent views of history and recent renovations keep the crowd moving. Many steps, to different levels so pace yourself

One should be quiet in a church. But oh no - the noice is loud. The hordes of tourists run like they were chased. But go down the stairs under Golgata - to where Sta Helena did find the Holy Cross (she claims) and you will find peace and quiet.

Nothing like what you would see in Italy, but the magnificent significance weighs on you as you walk through the doors to see pilgrims kneeling at the plank that I presume he was laid down upon. The place is imbued with the solemnity of grace and sacrifice that is recognized. the Monks waiver between smiling benevolently at the visitors and... More
