It should be illegal, having this much fun. After a short but very informative and entertaining introductory lesson from professional archaeologists, and a demonstration of the wet sifting technique, you're set loose to sort this sacred soil on your own, but with expert supervision. The material is uncurated, meaning nobody has handled most of the stuff for thousands and thousands... More

I've been volunteering here since 2008. It is a fantastic way to "dip your foot in the water" of biblical archaeology. Open most of the tear, but do send an email request for sometimes they will have a bus load of Israeli school kids there as well...no problem if you can handle it. As far as I'm concerned, it is... My 26 year old son, my sister and I were in Israel last week. I love archeology/anthropology and had always wanted to do a short "dig". Someone mentioned this activity. What a blast. The initial interview of the history/topography of the area was interesting and then we got to play in the dirt. My son said it was one of... More

We'd heard of this from friends who made two visits when they were recently in Jerusalem. And, having done it, I can see why they went back. You have a 20-30 minute talk from an archaeologist covering the history of the Mount and the techniques to use, and what to look for. Then you're set loose with a sieve and... More

We had a great morning out at the sifting project. Very well organised on site. Appreciated the thorough introduction. Our kids, aged 8-15, loved the actual sifting, as did the adults. Was exciting to uncover bits of ancient and modern history. Would have appreciated better instructions on how to drive to the site. Also, we had to call to book,... More

This is a very interesting and real activity, not kitchy or touristy. You will find some very interesting artifacts from the Temple Mount, that were discarded in the tailings of illegal digging on Har Ha Bayit. Highly recommended for a family.

This was one of the most relaxing and fun things to do as a tourists. I thought it was going to be lame and 'for kids". I was WRONG! I actually found several green pieces of glass and pottery. I hated that it ended so soon. The students that helped identy the contents of the bucket were just great! Great... More

Walk down 1000 steps to hear a speech and pick through buckets of dirt that contain unrecognizable bits of, well, I don't know. They were unrecognizable. Climb 1000 steps back to the car. If you're a hardcore amateur archaeologist, this attraction is for you. The remaining 97% of us should stay away.

Sifting through the material taken out from under the Temple Mount is an exhilarating experience. Everyone finds something, whether a piece of pottery, coin, jewelry or piece of a building. Seeing something that was underground for 2000 years right there in your hands is a fantastic experience. The activity is good for all ages from age 2-3 till 103. Explanations... More
