We’re spending a few days in Jerusalem to escape the heat and humidity of the coast. Tonight we did the Old City Ramparts Walk, which is open at night (until 22:00) only for the month of August. The refreshing breeze and clear sky added to the enjoyment of the walk, as did the many interesting vistas.
At NIS 20 (10 for seniors) this makes for a cheap night out. There is a convenient new access point outside the Tower of David (actually in the moat)
Note there are plenty of steps to climb during the walk, some rather steep!

We tried this activity on a whim because we wanted to get a better feel for the layout of the city of Jerusalem. The tickets allow access to both the southern and northern ramparts (entrances are near the Jaffa gate). Ticket prices were reasonable and the entrance window allowed for flexibility in visit times.
I preferred the southern ramparts because they were cleaner and better maintained and the views were nicer overall.
I would not recommend this experience to anyone with mobility or balance issues as there are uneven surfaces/steps and slippery stones. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and hold onto handrails.

The ramparts themselves are not particularly spectacular although you get a bit of history from the time the Jordanians defended the city in the 1948 war. What you do get out of the walk is fantastic views down into the old city and out into the old city. Well worth going on the walk

It is really very interesting to do this walk because, at same time, you are looking at the old city (from above) and you are looking at the modern city outside the Wall. Don’t forget to take very comfortable shoes because the walk is quite uneven. Enjoy!

I started the walk from Jaffa Gate. On my four days of walking around the Old City, I saw only a few people going on the Ramparts Walk. Viewing the walls, I could see that there appears to be a number of walls built on top of walls. This is in part because with changes in the empires which ruled over Jerusalem, such as the Ottomans, Muslims, Christian crusaders, the Israelite chieftain Solomon, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs. Many of the rulers modified the city walls and temples to their own liking. Thus, the walls have a lot of history behind them. From the upper walls, I had great views of the Old City on one side, and the new on the other.

This gives you a very good perspective of the Old City, it’s buildings, people and their activities. We bought one ticket valid for both directions but went on two days. Lots of steps up and down but not overly demanding and there are always handrails. We stopped multiple times to take in the special views and to listen to the muezzin during Ramadan. Very pleased that we did.

Don't bother. Yes, you do get up on the top of the wall and get to circle around the Old City, but it's a very narrow walkway with LOTS of stairs up and down. The man selling tickets was so rude we almost walked away and now I wish we had walked away. For 25 nis it's not a huge waste of money, but there are so many more interesting sights in J'lem.

It costs 25 ILS for a 2-day pass. Can be purchased at shop just inside jaffa gate.
There’s 2 walks: north and south. North is longer. South seems to finish at dung gate.
An interesting perspective on old city with plenty of photo opportunities.
Not suitable for young kids or elderly with mobility issues. Wear comfortable shoes.
There’s a free audio guide which can be downloaded for offline use via ijerusalem app.

Once you re done with most of the holy places one can do the walk on the walls. Ticket 25 shekles , i was never told it was valid for 2 days neither was there any english part on ticket. Oldies have to be careful there are plenty of stairs and slippery stones too. On the left theres new Jerusalem and on the right old with view of unkempt roof tops. Some views are good still not the price.

My wife and me left the ticket counter because of the rude and racist selling guys there. Never gonna go back to this place again. It was not the only bad experience in Jerusalem but the worst one. You can’t even ask people for directions there and expect a normal answer.

I am aware that one Ticket for the Ramparts Walk covers both the Northern & Southern Walk. If I buy the ticket can I use it to do the walks on different days.
Thanks
Anthony

YES - we used the ticket to go North one day and then South the NEXT day... just confirm with the ticket agent when you buy it how long it is good for but you may definitely do it on different days. It is tiring enough that you'll probably prefer dividing it into 2 days. (Note that the ticket is single-use... so you cannot repeat the ramparts you previously enjoyed.)

Could someone please give me the exact location from where I can but a ticket to do the Ramparts "clockwise" Walk from Jaffa Gate to Lions Gate?
Thanking-you
Anthony
Written October 28, 2015
You pass the gate into the square, and immediately on your left there is the tourist office where you get the tickets.

I am going to Jerusalem in June and I know it will be hot at that time. On one day I am hoping to do this walk from Jaffa Gate to Lions Gate ... take a pause for Lunch... and then walk through the Garden of Gethsemane and the Mount of Olives. Am I giving myself too much walking, a lot of which is uphill, for one day?

I am aware of the two walks here. One clockwise and one anti-clockwise starting at Jaffa Gate. Is it possible to actually begin the walk at Lions Gate and finish at Jaffa Gate...probably anti-clockwise?
Cheers
Anthony

That would be a good plan. However, you may only enter near the Jaffa Gate (because the other gates are exit only). The ticket sales office is just inside the Jaffa Gate - and the entrance that leads to the New Gate and Damascus Gate is close by. The walk that lead to the Zion Gate and Lions Gate is harder to locate - you must go outside the Old City Walls and walk South a moderate distance and that entrance is somewhat hidden. You scan you ticket and the turnstile unlocks for you. It is definitely worth doing both walks I think.

I will have just 4 days in Jerusalem soon. Is this time to really see the City?
Anthony
Written October 12, 2015
I'd say yes, but obviously it all depends how much time you spend on each site. You might want to make a list with opening hours, see what is available only during AM, what is available on the PM, and plan accordingly. Some museums are closed on Mondays, some open late on Tuesdays/Thursdays, etc. As others mentioned above, weekend might be a 'problem' for the tourist who'd want to make the best out of his/her schedule; the city slows down, all public institutions and transportation are not available to visit/use. Some museums are open on Saturdays and there are taxis available. Jerusalem is a beautiful city, and you would enjoy it very much in 4 days if you plan ahead.

Is it safe for an American to exit at the Damascus Gate which I believe is the Arab quarter
Written August 31, 2015
All of these responses are from a month ago - the recent Intifada activity in the last week makes that area questionable. It appears they are targeting Jews. They rely upon tourists and are not likely to target Americans at present.
