This is a large and not very attractive cemetery which apparently exists only because of Jewish belief - that when the Messiah comes He will arrive at the Mount of Olives and that therefore those buried there will be the first in the queue. Personally I doubt that it's quite that simple or that the Messiah will be so undiscerning. It has history though so it's worth a quick look.

I saw this place outside the old city of Jerusalem and it did not impress me. During my visit to the Mount of Olives, I avoided this place because I do not understand why it should be visited. There are other beautiful things to see in this area, starting with the Church of All Nations and ending with the Ghetsimani Garden.

While there is nothing to compare to the sight of the "old city" of Jerusalem, it is easy to not observe all of these graves and tombstones while initially viewing the city. My guide said it was the most expensive cemetery in the world due to its proximity to Jesus' ascension into heaven, but also for His expected return to this world.

The hill is full of tombs but some in pathetic condition, area is little shabby & need proper care & cleaning.
It was told that a hell of of amount to be paid to get a burial place in this area.

Not your usual site to see but it's a nice place as it is a lookout point where you can see Jerusalem!
You can also see prophecy fulfilled while standing on the Mount of Olives looking towards Jerusalem, at the temple mount and at the mercy gate/golden gate and at the kidron valley and at the city of David.

From a christian viewpoint, visiting the mount of olives, because Jesus walked there, acended to heaven and did alot of his teaching there, i prefer tombstones, over shopping malls, restaurants and buildings. so it preserves more of the landscape as it ones was. And for Jews this is an important place, because they will see the messeiah when he comes.

Would you pay £100,000 to be buried? That, according to our guide, was the current asking price for a plot in the Jewish Cemetery on the Mount of Olives. This is the most ancient and most important Jewish cemetery in Jerusalem. Burials started here 3,000 years ago and continue to the present day. The cemetery contains some 150,000 tombs from various ages. More recent tombs are those of Menachem Begin, the former Prime Minister and Robert Maxwell, former newspaper magnate. There are also the tombs of the defenders of Jerusalem's Jewish quarter in the 1948 War of Independence. According to tradition, the bodies buried here will be the first to be resurrected during Armageddon.

Very interesting to see the cemetery with the stones on the tombs.
For peoples of other culture like me it is a kind of dramatic their funeral habits.

The view is great of the Al Aqsa complex, but the graves from what we could see wasn't great. They didn't look well looked after. I heard that each plot has an extortionate cost too. Worth going for the view only.

The entry is unmanned, so you can go in. If you know where the graves are then that’s a big plus, because there isn’t anyone there to help you. I hope this helps.
