the movie at visitors centre is alittle infantile, the site itself overwhelming what was accomplished by herod- but the signs are sparse in my opinion, all walking uphill till reach the palace/fortress, and on a hot day, not pleasant. getting to the underground cisterns/refuge is wonderful, and kids will enjoy exploring. once in the area treat yourselves to the caliber... For students of the Bible this is a great experience. Seeing the opulence of Herod's palace which 2000 years ago could be clearly seen from Bethlehem reinforces the contrasts between what the man views as important vs. God's view.

Wonderful! There's so much fascinating history and archeology. I had a private guide who made the site come alive.

I took a public bus to reach this site. It lets you off at the foot of the mountain next to an army base so it is safe to visit. The lower city has columns surrounding a pool. Walking up, you will see a model of how it looked at Herod's time. The site is a lot of fun to... More

Few people will visit Herodian because it is located very close to a number of Palestinian villages. This is a shame because it is fascinating and they are always finding out more. It's like a mini--masada. Kids will enjoy walking down the steep stairs inside. I'm not crazy about the introductary film, you can learn some background online or from... More

We had seen Herodium so often from afar but had never been for a visit. Thanks to friends we were treated to an excellent guided tour.

One should be prepared for quite a bit of walking and some step climbing. The place itself is fascinating and the view is great. Definitely recommended to take a guided tour, as the story of the place is as intresting as the the physical findings. closed shoes, even in the summer, might be a good idea, as i bumped into... The scope and vision of King Herod is unreal. 2,000 years ago he built a summer palace with lakes (dare I say swimming pools) in the middle of the dessert and also built his own burial site - and then had the entire thing buried to form what from the distance looks like a small volcano. About 45 minutes outside... More
