The Temple of Hercules honoring the Roman hero and god is the most important Roman structure in the Amman Citadel. It dates to 161-166 AD. It’s thought the temple was not finished because they are no remains of additional columns. Nearby are the pieces of what was once a colossal stone statue of Hercules, estimated to be 39 ft (12 m) tall. Remaining are three fingers and an elbow.

Very nice ruins of the Temple, it sure reminds one of the many ruins in Greece and Italy and clearly see their influence. From here you will enjoy amazing views of the City and the Roman Amphitheater down below as well as the majestic Jordan flag in the opposite side of the Citadel. Included in the Jordan Pass.

The Temple of Hercules is justly one of the many ruins to see when you do a walking tour of the old Citadel on one of Amman’s highest hills. If you choose to walk up to the Citadel then the hill climbing will test your fitness, but it is worth the climb. Alternatively you can get a very cheap taxi ride up from the old part of Amman. The Temple is worth seeing but so is the rest of the amazing fortress. Don’t forget to check out the museum when you are there. They have a wonderful collection of antiquities from Amman and other parts of Jordan.
