- Maria0MagdalenaLondon, United Kingdom556 contributionsGreat addition to a trip to JerashWe went to Ajloun as part of a day trip from Amman. We started off in As Salt, where we had breakfast and a stroll, then drove to Ajloun, after that Jerash, and an early evening stroll around downtown Amman. It's a great castle, really fired up the kids' imagination. Unlike many places in Jordan, it has a good number of explanatory plaques all over the venue, which really aids the experience.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 27, 2023
- Kathryn M112 contributionsWonderfully restored crusader castle that can be explored.Wow! Ajloun castle has been carefully restored to allow access to many areas of the castle. Beautifully lit and presented. We had a guide with us as part of our tour so were given lots of information, but there wasn’t any real signage at the site. If you didn’t have a guide, there is information you could find in a guide book. Fantastic mosaics on show in one of the rooms.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 1, 2024
- wewhynotSalisbury, North Carolina997 contributionsAn interesting CastleI visited this castle as part of a solo tour to Umm Qais, Ajloun Castle, and Jerash. During the drive up, the driver stopped so I could get a view of the castle from below. Arriving at the castle, I showed my Jordan Pass and walked into the site. It is a little bit of a walk uphill, but not too bad. I walked around the castle a little bit and then entered the castle. The interior was fairly well lit, and most areas were fairly open. I visited the small museum in the castle. I think I only visited the first three floors of the castle, just decided to not climb further up. It was a nice place to visit.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten January 25, 2024
- Ariyya546 contributionsInteresting castleThis castle from the time of the Crusades was an interesting place to visit. It's on top of a hill and gives indications of being heavily fortified back in its heyday. There are some plaques and mosaics, but the castle itself is interesting with its multi-levels and stairs. Worth an hour or two to see another side of Jordan's history.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten March 29, 2024

I came with two young boys who were fascinated by castles but had never seen one in real life. This was a great way for them to start. Towering over the surrounding valleys, and at the end of a steep road, the castle is compact but full of amazing sights. Views over the surround landscape (including across the border) can be seen through the archery windows or ramparts, and the boys loved exploring the many well designed halls and rooms. The castle itself was pleasantly cool, in contrast to the heat radiating outside. The promontory to Jerash, Amman and Umm Qais makes this part of an ideal day trip. And the boys have been actively playing knights since we visited.

Nice little castle with outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. There isn't much to see of the castle itself other than the small museum. Entry is included with the Jordan Pass and there is limited parking next to the gate. Additional parking is located a short walk down the (rather steep) hill. It's a bit far out of the way to drive if you're coming from Jerash or Amman like we did. In retrospect, we wouldn't drive out of our way to see it but rather would have gone as part of a guided tour. The views were not worth the gauntlet of bad drivers and narrow roads to reach it.

Visit this fort located more than an hour's drive from Amman.
The fort itself is very touristy and now also served by a cable car which leaves from the bottom of the town. Free parking nearby possible.
The fort can be visited in 30 minutes with different rooms, a mini museum, and above all the 360-degree view of the region seen from the roof of the fort.
If you're in the area, and you have the Jordan Pass, why not, but don't especially make the trip.
Few explanations in the building and apart from the view, little interest.

This castle is high up in the hills and is in pretty good condition. It was originally a monastery and then rebuilt as a castle in the 10th century (or so). You can go through the several floors all the way to the top where there are nice views of the area. Most of the rooms are empty now, but you do get a sense of the scale of the building and learn a bit about the history of the place.

Great views from the top - could still see the snow on the sides of the hills (from the week before) in some spots, even though the sun was out!
A great little 12th century castle, well preserved and lots of steps and uphill walking so be prepared. We were part of a tour group, so had a guide who knew the history, Small museum to check out on the way in or out.

Ajloun castle is a 12th century fortress that is quite well-preserved. When we went there, it was quite cold and misty. The famed distant vistas from viewing points were blanketed in fog. Still the dry moat, arched entrances, stone chambers and arrow slits provided quite a few instapic moments. There is a small museum, too.

A very old castle, not very well preserved, not very impressive. All you can see are a few empty halls, a tiny archaeological museum, plus the (bland) panorama of the region, seen from the terrace above.
It is worth a visit of a maximum of one hour.

This 12th century castle is a must watch. It is 1.5 hr drive from Amman though the hilly area. The castle was built for Salahudin and his army. Length of visit 1-2 hr. A well maintained site depicting the early life in fortress and the way it was guarded. Spectacular view from the top of castle towards valley. Entry ticket is part of Jordan pass or can be brought at entrance for JD 03 JD.
Do try costumes of sultan, sultana and take photos of castle as background. A studio is run close to the entrance of castle by Eng. Al Ruba.

Aljoun Castle was a fortress and remarkably preserved overlooking a mountain range. It was built in the 1100’s as a defense against the Crusaders. The views from the castle are a highlight for visitors. Very interesting history. Lots of steps so beware.
