Darband looks like a natural jewel amid the hustle and bustle of a crazy metropolitan like Tehran! If you’re tired of traffic and pollution and need peace, go to Darband in the north of Tehran and enjoy the scenery and pleasant weather. There, you can go either hiking or mountaineering to Mount Tochal, take some nice photos, or have fun eating Persian food and snacks in a traditional restaurant, all alongside a river winding from the hillside to the top. Darband’s so popular among Iranians and you can have a great chance to mingle with locals there. You can also use other recreational facilities, such as a chairlift. You can reach there by bus, metro, or taxi via Tajrish Square.

Was a great break from the busy Tehran. Gives a nice view of the mountains around Tehran. You can catch a chair lift to the top to look over. Warning: it's a scary ride. They move around and stop a bit..

A great escape from the busy Teheran. Fresh air, mountain views and friendly people. Great selection of local restaurants and shops. About one hour from Old Town Teheran depending on traffic.

I can look beyond the masses of people which flock to this attraction and the busy buzz around the local merchants but I do not understand how locals treat this natural jewel with so little respect and litter to a degree I have only seen in extreme poor regions of other countries. I had a hard time to take pictures of the river without any junk.
People of Teheran, have some pride and preserve your national treasure and start to clean up your own mess! It is embarrassing. Local restaurant owners could easily could put together an initiative which will provide a regular clean up. There are many willing local workers available who would be more than happy to receive some modest additional income.
We also had a tea at a local restaurant. To our surprise the operator approached us within 20 min to leave the place to make space for new clients even though there were enough empty places available. I understand that they have to operate a business but this is just to show you the vibe of this area. We ended up ordering some food as we got hungry and were not bothered anymore.
I did enjoy Dar Abad much more. More or less a similar natural setting within the mountains without the masses, stores and restaurants. Long hiking trails along the river or up onto the mountains.

This is a good place to visit to experience a little nature near Tehran. At the foot of the Alborz Mountains, Darband is a ravine with water flowing through it and a whole ecosystem of restaurants and cafes surrounding the water. Very popular with tourists and Iranians alike.

Darband is one of the oldest squares in tehran. It's beginning from qhods squre in near of tajrish square, you should go up from ghods squre in darband ST until you arrive to darband SQ. It's really nice street. In south edge of SQ exist sa'ad abad, its very good location for photography and visiting museums.

Very nice and unique scenery , surrounded by mountains of north tehran there is loads of restaurants , herb and tea places to chill out and get away from hectic life style with a nice meal and fantastic atmosphere,
There is a wide variety of foods to try , we tried Shishlik and lamb kebab very nice and well done .
There is also Hubble bubble , tea and bagh lava as dessert is a must try .
In late March And April it’s best season to go to as spring time you get to see blossoms .

Does one have to walk up darband? Or is there a gondola/tele-cabin to get you up so you can walk down?
Written December 14, 2018
Yes. There is a 2 person chair lift that goes up and you walk back down. I can't remember how much it was but not that expensive.
They also take a photo of you on it with Tehran in the background before you get to the top and you have the option to buy it if you like.

Hello everyone who has been to Darband!
How should we best get to Darband from downtown Tehran?
Where does the ropeway go to? Can we walk?
Which trails are beautiful without many restaurants etc?
Is there a map?
Which trails would you suggest for a 2-3 hour walk?
thank you all!

My wife and I, 75 year old US citizens, plan visit to Iran in Oct and will travel with tour most of the time. While in Tehran we wonder if we will be comfortable/safe walking about on our own, shop and dine, without concerns about confrontations. We also would enjoy a hike above Darband, but wonder about the safety of travel without a local guide. Thanks to anyone who might have advice. Alan and Marylee, Sacramento CA

Dear Alan & Marylee
From what I could see during my trip there, Tehran is safe & you should be good on your own. The Iranians are very hospitable and friendly.
However, like all new places, I would suggest that you finish your exploring while it is daylight.
Iranians speak English but it is broken & quite accented, so that may need a little getting used to, to be able to understand what is being communicated.
Enjoy your trip and all the best

Hi there,
We will be traveling to Tehran by next week, could you please name the restaurant you would advise?
somewhere well organized, tidy with good foods.
Thanks in advance,

The restaurant names are all very similar and serve similar food. I am not sure of their names but there are two that are very good. One is on the right hand side of the stream flowing through Darband. It has extensive parking in front and is regularly frequented by diplomats. The other is set on the hillside to the left of the stream. It is painted in yellow ochre and has tables on different floors which you can see from the pathway as you walk up.
