About
mim is a private mineral and fossil museum in Beirut, Lebanon. The minerals section exhibits 2,200 minerals, representing 510 different species from 75 countries. Created by nature, those works of art with breathtaking aesthetics formed in earth’s crust millions of years ago. Salim Edde has built up this collection starting 1997. It is considered one of the world's paramount collections for the variety and quality of its minerals. A didactic circuit, with screens displaying films and scientific applications of mineralogy, will reveal a world of marvels, priceless both from an aesthetic and scientific point of view. The fossils section hosts 200 fossils from Lebanon, including Mimodactylus libanensis, a unique complete pterodactyl, promoted by means of state-of-the-art techniques: a hologram, an auto-stereoscopic movie and a game that delights children and adults. The history of fossil formation is shown through an animation that submerses you in a journey 100 million years ago.

I had the privilege to join a private guided tour by the founder of this beautiful museum, Mr Salim Eddé. I cannot decide which was the most astonishing : the exhaustive collection of minerals or his extensive knowledge on the subject of minerals and geology.
I have visited several natural science museums, but none of their mineral departments can compete with the Mim Museum.
The smaller section dedicated to lebanese fossiles is worth visiting too.
If you are only interested in seeing beautiful minerals, 2 hours should be enough.
If you want to read the information or use the informative panels (and their very user-friendly interface), add an extra hour.

One of the most exciting minerals museum in the world, in one of the smallest countries in the world. We visited twice within 6 months, and were lucky to hear the (super-passionate) founder, Salim Eddé, explain his adventures in acquiring many of the world-class pieces, as well as explain about their characteristics. Ticket entry left, symbolically, at Lebanese Pounds 10,000 or less than 15 cents.

I’ve been to countless museums in Europe, but I don’t remember being stunned like when I felt when visiting this museum. It’s extremely well organized and the collection is extensive. Keep in mind that this is a private museum, meaning 1 person collected this rare collection over the years by himself. I highly recommend visiting this museum.

Really nice collection of minerals and crystals. They are presented very well and there is a lot of information. Their exhibit of fossils is really innovative and the film really gives it an extra dimension. Our daughter loved the dinosaur fossil and the video gamed based on it.

Really well laid out museum with what seems like thousands of incredibly beautiful minerals. It's hard to believe these all exist naturally. The exhibit gives a good explanation of how they form, where they're located and how they are attained.

I never thought that there is such an outstanding museum in Beirut, which is easily accessible. It might take a full day to check all the available items. But you might also check it quickly for 2-3 hours. The best is the Evolution 10 minutes video, and the formation of the minerals across time, breathtaking !
Such a peaceful room (excellent music, nature music embedded in the video), you will forget about time during those 10 minutes.
An excellent place to pass by when visiting Beirut !

My name is Daniel Trinchillo and I am mineral collector and dealer in the United States. I have visited the mim museum in Beirut and the experience is mindboggling! The sheer quantity of both best of species and exceptional quality rarities of the mineral kingdom is STAGGERING!

I have been trading in the world finest minerals for the last 20 years and I can say no single collection in any museum or private collection in the world can compete with the assemblage on display at the mim. It is a must see while in Beirut, and is enough of a reason to make a journey there un-into its own. In a word - SPECTACULAR!
