One of the most unusual sculptures I’ve seen this one is very well documented and photographed. Indeed it was billed as one of the highlights of our day tour to Punta del Este. It is impressive but very hard to get a good picture as it’s surrounded by tourists all day long. You may be lucky early morning or late evening to secure a quite pic alone.

Our cruise ship shore excursion listed "La Mano" ("The Hand") as one of its Punta del Este attractions. As we pulled up to the sculpture, though, the guide announced that local regulations banned tour buses from unloading passengers here. We took photos and videos from inside our bus as it slowly moved by. Disappointing, to say the least. I was left wondering if there truly was a ban or if the tour company just didn't want to take the time to stop. Worth asking about in advance if you're booking a city tour.
This is a fascinating piece of art. Chilean artist Mario Irarrazabal created it during a contest in 1982 as part of the first International Meeting of Modern Sculpture in the Open Air. When other contestants started fighting for spots in a plaza, he decided to work on the beach. The nine competing sculptors had the summer to finish their work; Irarrazabal finished his in six days. It's the only one of the sculptures still on display!
TIPS:
* If you're a cruise ship passenger who wants a "hands on" experience, just walk over here from the spot where cruise ship tenders unload their passengers. It's about 10 blocks.

The hand sculpture in Punta del Este is quite striking. The fingers are rising out of the sand. It is known as La Mano or Los Dedos. The sculpture was created by Chilean artist Mario Irarrazabal and it is a tourist photo must. You'll have to wait your turn in many cases because people are congregating and taking pictures everywhere.

Our tour to an olive oil producer drove by on the way. However, on the way back we were given the option to get off the bus and walk back to the cruise ship (about 10-12 blocks). I was the only one to get off but this gave me the opportunity to walk over (about a block) to take some photos. Of course, it was busy with tourists and locals but it was still fun to see and photograph.

This iconic sculpture by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal, completed in 6 days a few months before the 1982 South Atlantic conflict, has a variety of names but is known to all locals as 'Los Dedos' (The Fingers). It is such a successful sculpture that it makes all the other nearby pieces look like junk from a scrapyard. Since it's on the windswept eastern side of the peninsula ('la brava'), and the beaches of the calmer western side ('la mansa') are only a few hundreds away, it would be fun if the Punta authorities could be persuaded to commission some toes the same size on Parada 1 of the mansa, within sight of the fingers, so that the hordes of tourists could imagine a huge body connecting them underneath the peninsula. The only problem is that 'fingers' and 'toes' are the same word in Spanish, so the toes might have to be known as the foot fingers ('los dedos del pie').

We walked here from the port area. You cannot miss it since there are lots of tourists in this area taking pictures and it is difficult to get a good picture without capturing a slew of other people in the photo. The purpose of the sculpture is to be a warning to swimmers since the waters in this area are particularly rough. The walk was along the promenade and was very nice. If you have seen something similar, you may want to skip it.

Punta del Este, Uruguay is a very pretty coastal town. It is developing, we were told for better or for worse, as a jetsetters playground. We enjoyed a 3 hour tour of the town with it's iconic Casa Puebla, which for me was Gaudi-esque, and the unique Mano de Punta del Este on the beach. Best was visiting a small scale olive plantation, Olivas de las Animas, where we enjoyed learning about the process, and tasting the various flavors of oil, together with a generous tray of accompaniements and local wine.

Famous hand in the sand. We really enjoyed taking pictures. Make sure you enter where there is a walk area. Several people were just walking on the sand and ended up trying to get the sand out of their shoes. It was busy with everyone trying to get a picture but worth it. It is just a fun place. There is a shop nearby where you can buy souvenirs. It is a must stop.

Not sure why this is an attraction but everyone goes and takes pictures of the fingers coming out of the sand. Sorry but nothing spectacular. Nice beach in front of the hand - though rough. Nice just to walk around PUnta del Este!

They aren't pink! This is a site to see. Yes, too many people climbing on them but...If you build it, they will come! It does have a boardwalk to walk around the fingers. Many statues up the beautiful beach worth seeing. Nice shops and restaurants as well. Great day trip.

Hi, would be great if you can give me some info on what is reachable or rather walkable from the port as we are on a cruise to Punta Delhi este in dec 2018.
We want to walk if possible to LaMano & then to the town centre . Is it a short walk , appreciate your reply asap . Thanking you in advance 🙏🏻

It's an easy walk from the cruise terminal to Los Dedos (La Mano) possibly 15-20 minutes. To reach there you will pass through the town centre unless you're referring to the shopping mall in general which is further west along Rambla Graf Artigas. That would be a taxi ride as the walk would be around 40 minutes possibly more.
