Decided to visit on a Sunday, partly as it was cheaper but also it fitted our schedule better. Paid for a taxi to get there and on arrival thought about turning around and going straight back to the hotel. In hindsight I wish we had. The crowds were ridiculously huge. The wait for the ticket was 90 minutes then another 30 minute wait to board. The ride took about 10 minutes and was OK although difficult to see much. At the top the crowds were even bigger. The whole mountain top was mayhem. The view was good over the city but definitely not worth the effort to get there. But the worst was not over. Although we had bought a return ticket for the funicular, the queue to board was so long we decided to walk. Big mistake. The queue to go down stretched for about 1km and was five wide. People were still trying to come up the hill. It was gridlock and a bit scary. No one in authority seemed to be overseeing this situation. Eventually, after about 2 hours we managed to get down. The whole thing was a bit of a nightmare and all quite tacky. Maybe on a weekday it would be better?

The funicular itself is nice and offers great views, but the crowd trying to get onboard on a Sunday is dissuasive. We arrived before 9 in the morning and it took one hour to go on. Much more for those arriving later. Not willing to repeat the experience on the way back we chose to walk down. Result: maybe worse! The path is literally invaded. Morality: NEVER go there on a a Sunday. We should have known! (Lines for the cable car were not better)

It was the only way up the Monserrate (beside walking) and once you are in the cabin it was relatively nice experience. It was crowded but felt safe. Quite bad was queuing to enter, the line was looooonggg and we waited and waited and then waited some more!

It's either this or the cable car, depending on when you go, but to me the funicular is more of an experience. While you're in it you don't realise how steep the ride is - take a moment to appreciate it when you make it back to the bottom again.

Bear in mind that there's no seating - only standing places - but the ride is fairly short. And that the waiting time can be quite a while if you arrive at a popular time. And that the extra walk from the station at the top to the lookouts is quite strenuous. And that there's less air and more sun :D

At the beginning I thought it would be a scary ride. Once riding it, this was slow and there was hardly any movement. The ride was less than 5 minutes.

We were able to wait about 10 minutes to get the ride. Try to get to the side facing the city. There are bathrooms up on top which cost 1000 pesos.

You might want to take the ride at night to see the city lights. Overall, a great adventure.

We went at 8:30 am on a Saturday and there were no lines. Pre purchased our tickets online, everything was seamless and well run. An engineering marvel and the views are to die for. The area around the entry does have some rough edges, so be mindful, but don’t let that dissuade you from going. Early morning is safer.

We purchased our tickets through San Isidro, so we didn't have to buy them at the spot. The ride up was quick and easy. I have a fear of heights and this felt super safe and smooth. They run them every few minutes, so you never really have to wait too long for it. The waiting areas are also covered, so you don't have to wait in the sun or the rain.

If you like waiting this is for you. First a queue for tickets, than 1 hours wait for the cable car. A waiting list for the restaurant, which was empty. At the summit, the whole place is littered with plastic kitsch. On our way back they closed the cable cars which meant another wait for the train. Nice views though, if it is not raining. But not worth the hassle. If you have the stamina, walk to the top.

To take the funicular up and down Monserrate is to avoid the hike. The cost is 10000 Pesos for a single and it works out at 16000 for a return I believe. The funiculars are regular and somewhat safe and take around 15 minutes for the ascent as opposed to 1 hour if you so choose to hike! On the way up the views are very beautiful and uninterrupted. Be warned, if you want to hike then you must be at the bottom between 5am-1pm.

We came with a tour guide on Sun...huge crowd of people..waiting in line and others climbing the hill. We had Priority Tickets and beat the crowd. Sunday is a busy time.. many looking to go to Mass. It was nice ride up...at the top there is good view of the surroundings below.
