There are just a few plaques on the wall but arguably the most important event in 20th century Colombian history happened here. Jorge Eliecer Gaitán was a charismatic, leftist politician who was assasinated in downtown Bogotá in 1948. Gaitan became famous by denouncing the 1928 massacre of striking bannana workers, which Gabriel Garcia Marquez also wrote about in One Hundred Years of Solitude.
