About
Head to Mount Monserrate for some of the best views in Bogota at over 10,000 feet above sea level. You can get to the peak by riding a family-friendly train, taking a cable car, or taking a 1.5-mile hike through the Colombian forest. At the peak, the highlight is the impressive 17th-century monastery and pilgrimage site that overlooks the city. You can recharge at the hilltop cafe or explore the mountain’s open-air market, which sells Colombian crafts and souvenirs.
You can check out Mount Monserrate on a tour of the Colombian capital, which typically includes a stop here. Visit early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.

- Rob RTredegar, United Kingdom1,391 contributionsA must do when in BogotáFor fantastic views of the city take the funicular railway to the summit of Mount Monserrat. You will get great views on the way up to the top. The church there is nothing spectacular and the coke cola sponsorship is a bit crass. However the main reason for visiting is the panoramic views of the city which are really something special. A good tip arrive early we got there at 9.00 am and there were no queues and it was very quiet at the top. We got back down at 10.00 pm and there were already queues to get to the top. Start your day early and visit here first to beat the crowds, you won’t be disappointed.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 15, 2023
- NeoAxionDetroit, Michigan541 contributionsBeautiful view!I didn't truly comprehend how big Bogota was until I came up here. Definitely worth a visit. We went on a Friday morning and the lines weren't bad at all, although I can see this place getting quite crowded during he weekend.Visited January 2023Written January 21, 2023
- ReservarldenLondon, United Kingdom241 contributionsAmazing viewsStunning!! Best to visit early in the day to avoid the queues although there was only a 20 minute wait on my visit. Taking the four minute cable car journey up to the top of Mount Monserrate allows you to then have some of the most fantastic views of Bogota. What a stunning city!! Spent around two hours here before then returning to the base using the funicular service which had a similar wait. Good value!!!Visited January 2023Written February 2, 2023
- JR5 contributionsGo to Mount MonserrateMount Monserrate is one of the most beautiful places I visited while in Bogota. It is historic and a must-see. The scenery is fantastic and there are church services provided. Take your camera and get ready to take many pictures. A word of caution, the church is built at the top and there are a lot of uphill/stairs to climb, but it is well worth it. Tickets are very economical. Be prepared to wait as there are many visitors, but they do a great job to move the lines quickly.Visited December 2022Written February 6, 2023
- Kevin SPontypridd, United Kingdom6,243 contributionsWorth a short visitThere was a reasonable 20 people in line for tickets before joining a 100+ long queue for the funicular or chair lift. But with the funicular taking about 60 people (max80) the line moved quickly. At the top unless you are really into the 12 Stations of the Cross walk it is mostly about the views. These are excellent of Bogota city. The church is actually quite a simple affair, not ornate at all. Lots of shops selling the usual tourist items, a couple of restaurants, one very expensive, and quite colourful planting and trees.Visited January 2023Written February 9, 2023
- jmaple51 contributionsBeautiful viewThis is a must for many Catholics so it's usually crowded to overcrowded. Many locals jog, walk or peddle up the hill so the trip takes longer than expected. The views and history make up for any inconvenience though.Visited January 2023Written February 10, 2023
- Eric HPrescott, Arizona13 contributionsBe careful with online tickets. We bought tickets online for 12:00pm Friday entrances. Purchasing ahead online was absolutely no advantage. When we arrived with our printed ticketed had to wait in line to exchange it for a real ticket with a QR-Code. After that we had to stand in line for 1.5 hours, half the time under hot sun. About 1:30 pm we entered the cable car for ascent. The view from on top is spectacular. The ticketing website STINKS. Purchasing tickets online ahead of time should be an advantage not the opposite.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten February 10, 2023
- Henry BMedford, Oregon798 contributionsA view from the top and a pilgrimage timeThe view is spectacular. If you have a time you might want to be there at night time. Besides the church, there are food and tourist stuff vendors as you walk past the church. If you need to go to the bathroom, you might need 1000 pesos cash. Los there is a path for the vía cruz. Overall, a great view of the city and a place to relax and meditate.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten February 18, 2023
- Kassemoff153 contributionsImportant place to visitThis is an important place to visit when visiting Bogota. We went up to the top by cable car and back down by funicular. A quiet church, painted inside in white, giving an angelic feeling. If you pay by credit card you can avoid the queue! Just ask one of the assistances at the entrance to the site. At the top there are several restaurants. Our timetable did not allow for a meal at a restaurant. The site gives an amazing view of the city.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten February 18, 2023
- gigrMarietta, Georgia30 contributionsBird's eye view of BogotaVery enjoyable visit, must as a visit to Bogota. Bird's eye view of city and various economic zones. If new to Bogota, do be careful of altitude sickness, as one goes from 8000 feet in Bogota to 10000 feet on Mount Serrate in short time. Better to avoid visiting on Sunday morning, as locals attend church mass, unless you want to be part of the religious experience as well.Visited February 2023Written February 25, 2023

We took the teleférico up and enjoyed looking at the view. However there were lots of stores all trying to sell us things which was a bit annoying. The church is lovely and there was a service in when we were there.
But for us the highlight was walking down the mountain. There is a path and it’s listed as a Camino, part of the Camino De Santiago. There were lots of steps and even railings and the view was incredible!! Highly recommend it!!

Great view, great atmosphere, definitely will go back
Advise buy the tickets with the skip the lines, lines can be very long and wait times to go up or down can be tiresome.
The church is very beautiful, and functional so you can hear mass or confess over there.
Don’t forget to make a wish in the well, and do a little shopping.

Once you get up there the view was great, you can see the whole city. Santa Clara restaurant was fantastic, service was exceptional and so was the food. If you're up there and want a fancier sit down meal that is the place to go. Note it is a little pricier but wort the the money. Now for the bad side, When we bought the tickets the web site did mention that the funicular was closed and that only the Gondola lift was working, they did not mention that the wait time going up and coming down could be 1 1/2 hrs plus . We stayed because you do not get a refund, and since we were already there. They could have had a set number of people that can go and state reservations were full.

We walked from our hotel in the centro histórico to the ticket office and bought return tickets. The walking route is closed throughout September. The views and atmosphere on a Tuesday were fantastic- hummingbirds, Spanish mass and amazing views. Great value for a first day in the city.

Wow!! What a beautiful sight to see. I happy I had the chance to experience it. However the wait line was long to get down the mountain. I advise being able to walk and stand for at least 1.5 hours.

This is a must. Everyone seems to say so, and it is for a good reason. The view is obviously very good, but it is also worth for seeing the humming birds and the landscape in general. Both the funicular and teleférico are an experience in itself. It is possible to take the one up, and a different one down.
The contrast to Bogotá is immense.
Be careful of potholes and stray dogs on the somewhat steep walking path to the ticket office.
There are a few places to get drinks and eat. Including tea de coca, which is good if you feel lighthearted from the height. Being a sweater, it is colder than Bogotá, but still pleasant.

Whether you are religious or not, you will sense a place of blessings.
The view is superb and the restaurant San Isidro is tops.
Lines for the lift can be long, especially Sunday, so plan accordingly.

This is a serious hike with many very steep sections. The altitude is a big factor, especially if you’re not acclimated. We loved the challenge and the forest is beautiful. The views from the top are awesome. The trail is paved with stones and can be slippery. I recommend buying some coca tea at the top for energy replenishment and relief from the effects of altitude.

I can't imagine that would be allowed, but since I don't know the answer, contact the venue directly or see if they have an information page or list of do/don't while visiting the site.

The cable cars has a wheelchair elevator along the stair way, I would recommend arriving as early as possible in the morning because it can be very crowded. Wait times for getting down can be very long so bring lots of water for the both of you. Weekdays in the morning won't be too busy since it is mostly tourists, although if you want to save money on tickets, go on a Sunday morning and leave as early as you can.
