This art Gallery is located at the old architect British Colonial building and art gallery was established on the first floor in 1971 and recorded by Yangon City Heritage . It is so rich and beautiful with contemporary installations from local artists for every weeks.Place is very quiet, cool and peaceful. Most of the paints and arts are very attractive.Every week can be changed the artists style and Art Boards.

Although the gallery is not set up air conditioned.but fun .Plan to spend no more than an hour here and no entrance fee. All of the pieces are for sale and . Worth a visit.

Interesting art space in a historic building in the colonial quarter of Yangon.
Exhibitions (mainly paintings, sometimes some scuptures) of mainly young Myanmar artists - each lasting only for a few days, so a good way of seeing works by many artists within a relatively short time span.

This was one of the most impressive buildings in colonial Rangoon. Sofaer’s Building is now an old, crumbling structure. Restoration work is urgently needed.

It’s indeed a thrilling excitement to visit “LAWKANAT” which is the first and foremost modern art gallery of Myanmar.

Original Sofaer's building with its’ Italian style itself is still vaunting as an inherited heritage of colonial era. Built in 1906 designed by Mr. Issac A Sofaer, and constructed by the renowned architect of that time Mr. Thomas Swale. Later owned by an Indian merchant Mr. Surti and changed the name as "Randeria Building". It was nationalized after the independence of Myanmar.

“LAWKANAT ART GALLERY” was officially established on 15th October 1971 by Colonel Ba Than (Writer Ba Than-Dhammika) and U Ye Htun.

With its’ first “break through exhibition of Myanmar Art History” by displaying nine artists, U Hla Shein, U San Win, U Ohn Lwin, who were somehow traditional artists, and remaining U Khin Maung (Bank), Paw Oo Thit, Ko Shwe Aung Thein, U Win Myint, U Sann Myint and Phae Nyunt Wai, were pioneering in Myanmar modern art endeavor of that time, together.

Obviously, it’s a birthplace of successive famous Myanmar artists, especially of the modern genre through along it's existence.

The legacy is still going on, in this 47-year-old “Gallery” inside the 112 years old building.

At present LAWKANAT is managed by its’ manager U Aung Myint Htun

My first solo art exhibition KZNZ 63: from March 22nd to 25th 2019 was held there.
