On a recent tour to Yangon, after reading about this Monastery asked our guide to take us there to visit.
It is about 20 minutes out of the city, but so worthwhile.
All very young boys and girls live there. Over 1000 living there.
We saw the Monks and Nuns studying in their classrooms, saw where they slept and also where they ate their meals.
It was a highlight of our trip to Yangon.

Because of a photo of hundred monks familiar to my experience in Thailand, I had spent my whole effort to find the place. I finally found that Kalyawa Monastery is located at the next door to Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. It is locally called as "Narga Hlaing Gu".

Getting to see over 1300 monks and novices line up for their midday meal was amazing. It's impressive how the monasteries offer a home as well as education to so many people in need.

From airport to Kalaywa Monastery start detail sightseeing. This trip will take you to Kalaywa Monastery where more than a thousand monks live and study, to see their last meal of the day in total silence.

I will not dwell upon the place as other posters had done a good job of it. What I will do is report what I had seen and more. After reading up on the place, we got a cab to take up to the monastery before 1030. The place is kinda neglected though there are monks milling about. Place is quite unkempt even though there are many monks around. What happened to those images of monks sweeping tirelessly while meditating? We also visited the quarters of the abbot to pay our respects. He is a pleasant old man kind enough to let us intrude upon his lunch hour. We also visited the main eating hall where the young monks brought their own food donated from laypeople to eat. There were no long lines of monks lining up for their food as posted by some posters that day .reason is the monks get to line up for food if there is some Good Samaritan that donate food that day. Upon enquiry, the senior monk informed us that if we want to provide a simple bowl of mohinga noodles, it will cost around 600,000 kyats( $370) for a group of 1000 monks .if the meal is rice with a few dishes, cost is 1600,000 kyats($1,000) .you got to call up and inform your intention a few days in advance .you provide the money and they will place order with their regular supplier. Hope this information is useful for those who are inclined to do some good work.

On a rainy day I visited the Kalaywa Monastery. It was about 30 minutes from the Strand Hotel half way to the airport. It is a beautiful place. It is a school that teaches boys and girls all core subjects, math, science, Burmese, English in addition to Buddhist teachings. The school takes in orphans. Everyone is really friendly and the kids came up to speak to me and my guide. They said they wanted to practice their English. I asked many times and they said they welcome photos and really don't mind having me visit as the class was starting. The place is funded by donations. While no one may ask you, they are grateful if you offer one.

We visited this Monastary at the mid day meal offering time and witnessed a large group of monks and novices walking in procession peacefully into the dinging hall, which is rare scene in this day and age.
The experience was so amazing and would recommend to anyone whishing to witness a centuries old religious practice of offering alms to buddhist monks. It further demonstrates the buddhist way of giving to others; either materially or providng one's services

Beautiful to watch the community embrace the monks, novices, and nuns. They feed over 400 people and are extremely welcoming. While I took pictures my partner helped serve food and they seemed to appreciate the role we both played (as well as the unsolicited donation we gave)

One of the memorable place in Yangon. The best time to visit in the morning after 10-00. It is not possible to travel in Myanmar and do not visit Monastery. This is unique opportunity to " feel" the spirit of Buddhism.

The best time to be there is around 10:30 am to see monastic activities and the long line of novices going to dining room for them to enjoy their lunch “ the last meal of the day”
If you are three earlier 10:30 am .. you might fail to see interesting activities becsue all novies usually leave monastery everyday around 09:00 to collect the alms foods and head back to monastery before 11:00 ( lunch time )

I'm having trouble finding out the time to visit this monastery. I saw one place say the morning meal is at 5 a.m., and others say to go at 11 a.m. Is 5 a.m. the morning meal, and 11 a.m. the mid-day meal? Many people recommend going for the morning meal, so does that mean I should go at 5 a.m.? Thank you.
